Diary of an Internships Blogger: Parting Words

As yesterday, Thursday, marked my final day of classes as a humble Middlebury College student, today marks my final day as your loyal blogger of the wonderful Internships blog here at the Career Services Laboratory of Dreams. I wanted to send off by giving you delicious readers some kibbles and bits of advice on what I have learned about internships during my time:

1) Start early – early bird really does catch the worm. If you know what you are interested in your coming into your first year, second year or what have you, great, talk to your parents, family, and friends to see how you can land an opportunity to get working experience. The more you have the better and the more you have early the easier it will be to land the one you really want later. Even if you don’t know what you want to do, come to Career Services so you can start the exploration process and getting your resume and cover letter ready to fly.

2) Become friends with the people at Career Services – one, they are super cool, and two, they can really help you in the research, application, and interview process. They will also alert you of all of the resources we have here including MOJO, LACN, Vault, Internships.com and many more.

3) Do your research and your internship homework – if you are applying to a company, make sure first and foremost that you understand the company, position, and why you are interested in gaining experience there. Know about the industry and if you have a passion for it then make sure you are able to convey that passion on paper in your cover letter and in the interview.

4) Stay on top of your stuff! – don’t be like me and wait until the last minute to send in application because that is the best way to miss deadlines and to make errors on your apps. Explore all resources and avenues to an internship. Use MOJO, of course, but don’t limit yourself to that one database, use LACN, employer websites, and other internship databases

5) Don’t fret – if you really want an internship and you utilize all of the resources at your disposal and you really work to gain the experience you want, you will get it. Nothing is going to be handed to you, unless you are real lucky, so go out and get what you want. Stay confident and stay humble. You go to Middlebury, you are smart, but there are also a lot of qualified smart people out there too. Just because you don’t get the internship you want doesn’t mean you won’t get another. Get it, baby.

So that was really more of a sympathetic pep talk but I think they are valuable things to remember. It has been a pleasure writing about cheese and internships on this super terrific blog for you beautiful people out there. Continue to read the blog for more juicy updates about Internships and careers and “you don’t go changin.” Boom.

All is not lost! Internships still to be had!

If you are like many people out there in the Middlebury world who are still looking for that killer internship to keep the mind busy and cupcakes active, then all is not lost. I was just buzzing around MOJO to see what I could find and there was quite a bit write home about. Most of you sports fans are in the heat of the moment with assignments before finals and the only time you have to yourself is during the still of the night. Well, besides knowing my 80s hair bands, I know that there are currently 25 new internships to be gobbled up within the next 6 days. Yes, in six days, 25 internship postings will disappear…forever! Well, maybe not forever but you won’t be able to apply to them anymore. Odds are you have a resume already so all you really need to do is just get that cover letter together and boom you are there!

There are quite a slew of new internships in industries ranging from the environment, to marketing, to teaching, and even still some to finance. Some notable institutions include:

CLIMB

City Parks Foundation

Good Harbor Consulting

US Department of Agriculture

Amazon.com

Milborne Farm

There are many more not listed and the best part is, is that all of these internships are dispersed throughout various parts of the country from the big three on the east (New York, Boston and DC) to way out in Washington state. You know that no one really does too much work on Fridays, especially when the sun is out, so when you are just sitting there on your cup cakes just log on to MOJO and apply! It’s easy baby.

As always there are drop ins from 2-5 every Monday through Friday and the wonderful folks over here want to talk to you! So stop in even if you just want to chat. Boom baby!

Opportunity at Global Environmental Institute in China

Gotta get that boom boom pow, or in layman’s terms, we got to save that environment y’all. Mother Earth is the sweetest lady we all know, fact…so why do we do her dirt? Great question, I know. Besides the pun being the second lowest form of humor, environmental issues are real and if you love Mother Earth and like to dabble in Chinese, then we have got something special for you.

It’s called an internship at The Global Environmental Institute (GEI) and it is a Chinese non-profit, non-governmental organization that was established in Beijing, China in 2004. Their mission is to design and implement market-based models for solving environmental problems in order to achieve development that is economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable. GEI is looking for some awesome Middlebury students to join their team.

So why is this jump off so sweet? For a number of reasons, actually. First, if you want to be in China and get a lot better at your Chinese then this is opportunity pretty tubular. Second, you’re not just doing tree hugger stuff but you’re working on how to develop the country both economically and socially while being sustainable to the environment; you’ll get experiences left and right. Lastly but not leastly, you’ll be doing a pretty good thing and you’ll get some sweet and spicy chipotle for that resume. Here’s a little blurb about GEI:

Upaid Internship Funding Information for YOU!

Got a sweetastic internship? That’s chill. What’s that though? A little bit upset that it is unpaid? Well, have no fear because Career Services Funding is here to quell your funding woes. First off, an experience is an experience, paid or unpaid, especially if it’s in a field or industry that you aim to pursue after your time at Club Midd. But working and not getting paid kind of stings, especially if you have to relocate. Even though cash may not rule everything around you, it is still pretty important because dem bills got to get paid! That’s why we have some awesome Alums and friends of this great place we call Middlebury who realize how important unpaid internships can be and have graciously put $90K towards funding unpaid internships.

Getting funding, however, isn’t quite as easy as clicking your heels and 2 stepping. You might already know this, but there is an application process you have to go through and the competition can be pretty fierce, but I have faith you will just do super duper! To see the application, just go to MOJO and search Middlebury Career Services. I do have a few tips I want to highlight, too.

First off, the deadline is April 1st, yes, the Friday of Spring Break. Get on the jump off soon. Next, you already have to have an internship lined up. This might be a bummer for some of you who don’t know but this is straight cold hard cash people are throwing around, they want it going towards a good cause. Also, this application isn’t quite the same as applying to a regular internship because your cover letter has to clearly and concisely answer some specific questions. Basically they want to know why you should get the duckets. One of the most important things I should enlighten you all to is that this application is a 2 stepper, baby. Meaning, you have to complete 2 separate steps. The first is on the MOJO piece, and then other is an online form you can get on the Career Services web site. Have any other questions? I’m super sure that you do. Luckily the beautiful people here at Career Services has complied a nice little page on their website to help answer all of you FAQs. Just go to go/CSOfunding and your dreams will come true, well, maybe just your questions will be answered, but toats mcgoats check it out, y’all, for all application instructions and things you need to get donzo.

On a side note, nice weather? Sup? Get outside and enjoy that sun baby! And stop by Career Services for some drop ins, 2-5 Err Day.

Intense. Internship. Inferno

Despite the cold continuing to command our collective core, it’s spring baby! With spring, first comes shower and then, hopefully, some sweet Sunflowers. Rolled up in the middle of all this spring madness and fruitfulness are some wonderful, wholesome, and wild applications to bodacious internships. Here at the Career Services Laboratory of Dreams, internship request forms have been coming in like a cool and entertaining plague that helps little rascals enjoy a nice sea breeze. Now, if that didn’t make any sense to you, as it made little to me, the bottom line is that WE HAVE A LOT OF INTERNSHIPS! Yes, some internship deadlines have passed but all is not lost because there are plenty more coming in by the boat load. My humble and hearty advice to you would be to start applying! Or at least check some of them out. And, contrary to popular belief that MOJO only houses Finance internships, there are internship postings across all fields. PR, Teaching, Non-profit, Marine Biology? You name it, we most likely have it.

Now, I love MOJO as much as Big Boi loves da purp but I want to inform all of y’all sportsfans out there that MOJO is not the end all be all of internship postings. Career Services offers a plethora (9th grade vocab word…sup) of resources and databases that the everyday Midd Kid can find internship info on. What should you do? Well, definitley chizzy check that LACN jumpoff (you can get to it from MOJO, hit the ‘jump to LACN’ button). Next I would definitely take a quick ol’ peek at the Midd-Only resources on the Career Services website. There you can find links to Internships.com, VAULT, and oodles of other resources.

Do what you would do with your portfolio (but not with your corporation), diversify , baby. You want to get your name out in as many places as you can so that you can, well, give your fine self the best chance possible. I am no necessarily endorsing a shot-gun or spray a pray approach, however. With each internship you apply to, you are not only representing yourself but also our school. Make sure you put time and effort into every application to make sure it reflects the type of person and candidate you want the employer to consider.

So what are you going to do right now? Go for 37 points and 23 rebounds like my boy Kevin Love? With whom I went to Elementary school and played 3rd grade hoops, btw. Well, probably not…but you should get your cupcakes in gear and start looking at internships before it is really too late. Feel free to stop by Career Services for some drop ins (2-5 PM err weekday)to discuss your internship future or if you just want to talk shop with yours truly. Check it, alliterations are alright, y’all.

Sweet opportunity for a fine student on the Vineyard

So who likes to spend summer just on one of the sweetest island on the east coast? I know you beautiful people out there do. Well, if you don’t quite have a job yet for the summer, perhaps you can send our friend Diana and email and inquire about a certain little job that is described below:
We are looking for a mature young person, probably a woman, who can be more or less a “jack of all trades”…it’s a good size property on Martha’s Vineyard, in Chilmark and the job might include the following tasks and these would differ from day to day:

Running errands and doing the shopping
Cleaning the boat periodically ( small boat!)
Light housekeeping (picking up, straightening)
Perhaps some gardening (weeding, picking the vegetable garden, small)
Helping with cooking ( 2-3 nights a week and some lunches..)
Helping with a dinner party, prepping, cleaning, serving
Taking care of the dog if we are gone for a few days, must love dogs!

Basically pretty much anything that comes up, resetting the router, etc! The person in question must be independent and mature. We are 30 minutes from any major town (Vineyard Haven and Edgartown), so having a valid license is important, but it’s mainly a character issue. We want a highly self starting person, generally staying home in the evenings. We certainly don’t demand that, but this is not the kind of job for a young person that wants to party every night! The accommodation is separate from our house which is usually considered a plus, but again, it’s pretty rural and the person in question should be comfortable with that. We are located right on Quitsa Pond, about 30 minutes from the Ferry. A sense of humor is a must and the attitude that no request is too small, silly or “not in my job description” would be a definite plus!

It’s certainly a paid position but we would have to negotiate the amount. Generally the girls buy their own food and prepare meals for themselves but of course have a room, in this case a tiny little cabin with bath.

Well, doesn’t that sound delightful? if it does to you, then email Diana at diana.barrett@gmail.com with a resume and a letter of interest! Do it.

As always, drop ins are from 2-5 PM Monday-Friday. So come in if you got any questions, y’all.

Dude…Appartment Vacancies in our Nation’s Capital…sweet

The only thing I love more that complications of the cornea are apartment vacancies…well, that’s not entirely true, there are plenty of things I love more than eye problems but nevertheless there is a pretty chill Midd Alum who wants other Midd dudes and dudettes to fill some apartment spaces. The monster man’s name is Colin Nangle. He graduated last May and his two roommates are bouncing on June 1st and he hopes to fill their spots for the summer. So, what does that mean for you? Well, whether you are going to be perusing around the National Mall feeding bread crumbs to the ducks and to that kinda awkward slash weird guy in the pond or you have a tubular internship for the State Department, if you are going to be living in DC for the summer and need a place to live, contact Colin. His email is Colin.Nangle@gmail.com. Do it, y’all.
I know you loyal followers of this fantabulously comical blog may have been yearning for my works of humor, but fear not. There is plenty more  blogs in the form of tasty treats to be had in the coming semester. Buckle up.

As usual, if you have any questions just stop by the Career Services Office for a drop in. 2-5PM Mon-Fri. One mic.

*Note that the picture above is not the picture of the apartment, just in case you couldn’t tell

Teach For America: Poppin’ Bottles and Making a Difference

Teach for America? Sounds chill. America, I love America, you probably should too. Teaching? Who wants to do that? There is this notion that “those who can do; those who can’t, teach.”Personally, if you want to know what I really think, I think that misconception is a big pile of junk in the trunk. We get the opportunity to receive an education at one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. Now, I’m not really one to preach, but here are some stats on education in America:

Educational inequity starts early and gets worse over time.

  • By the time they reach fourth grade, children living in low-income communities are already two to three grades behind their higher-income peers.
  • Just half of students in low-income communities will graduate high school by age 18. Those who do graduate will perform on average at an eighth-grade level.
  • Overall, only 1 in 10 students growing up in poverty will graduate from college.

I’m sure you are moved by those stats, but seriously but who wants to teach? Let’s just make that straight cash homie! Because teachers don’t make anything, right? Well, little did you home skillets know, they actually make a whole lot, they make a difference.

Many of you beautiful people out there have probably heard about this little organization called Teach for America, and if you haven’t, listen up! Teach for America provides a critical source of well-trained teachers who are helping break the cycle of educational inequity. These teachers, called corps members, commit to teach for two years in one of 39 urban and rural regions across the country, going above and beyond traditional expectations to help their students to achieve at high levels. Teach For America corps members and alumni are leading some of the most successful efforts to close the achievement gap in communities nationwide.

Macquarie Capital Internship Deadlines A Coming

I guess I should do a post on some internships coming up, because this is an internships blog dontchaknow? Well, there are some upcoming deadlines, like today, for opportunities at a pretty cool company called Macquarie Capital. Yes, it is an investment back, but it seems like a pretty chill place, for a bank. They are based in the land down under, Austrailia, and their US presence is getting to be pretty bodacious. I went to an information session for the company in the fall and they told us about their open floor system, and it seeeds sumptuous. What does open floor mean? It probably means as much to you as the DMV lady saying my headlight ticket was “crossed in the mail” so therefore I don’t need to worry about it…right. But anyways, it means that at Macquarie there are no offices. Everyone is on the same floor, interns, first year analysts, VPs and Executives. They can all be sitting next to one another with no overwhelming feeling of hierarchy, sharing fruit salads and chatting about sheep farms (on their break time that is, wink, wink). Bottom line, I think this place, Macquarie, is kind of cool, and the info guy gave us ping pong balls for “ping pong” as a parting gift. So if you are a junior and you are interested in finance, check out these Macquarie opportunities. Also, mind you, these are mostly opportunities for chaps studying abroad right now, but if you are at Club Midd right now, keep your eyes peeled for other Macquarie opportunities:

Macquarie Funds Group Internship Deadline January 12, 2011

Macquarie Capital Summer Internship Deadline January 12, 2011

If you want to find out more about Macquarie, or other sweet upcoming internships, just, you know, drop by the CSO. We got dem drop in urr day from 2-5 PM Monday-Friday. Enjoy the snow why dontcha!

Why the goofy picture? I typed in Macquarie into Google, and yes, that is what came up. It’s awesome.

LACN – Embrace it, use it, love it

So, here we are, back at Club Midd doing the whole J-term thing. For me, because I’m so fantastical, I am enjoying the nice mountain breeze and bright sun, maybe I will go skiing one day, maybe I won’t. But one thing I do know, if I was a junior, is that I would be applying to INTERNSHIPS, daddy! You know that you have oodles of time during this delicious and savory month, why not take advantage of it and dominate some applications? Exactly, get on it. You know gosh darn well that the CSO Laboratory of Dreams is just cranking internships top shelf by the boat load so there is never a shortage to the amount of opportunities waiting to be devoured.

When Club Midd enthusiasts and CSO connoisseurs think of where to apply for jobs, they obviously think of MOJO. But I am here to let you beautiful sports fans out there know that there is a sweetastic resource that tastes better than a twisti cone on a summer day called LACN, the Liberal Arts Career Network. Basically, it’s for tubular liberal arts schools such as Middlebury and it has thousands, literally, thousands of internship and job opportunities. Get your hind quarters moving and start filling out those applications! Or as my friends at CNET say, “Tap that App.” Appropriate? Questionable. Catchy? Totally. Tap it.

Given that I am a Midd student, and a senior to boot (what does that even mean?), I have been applying to some jobs. Notably, I just tapped some apps for jobs in DC. But it also turns out that if you are looking for some internships in DC, you’ve struck gold. Not only does LACN have some opportunities to work at the White House, yeah the big one, but it also has some other neat opportunities. Here is a list I’ve compiled of employers who are offering internships with expiring deadlines, aka, you should apply meow:

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Renewable Energy Policy Project

National Gallery of Art (NGA)

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS

Besides calling Ghostbusters, what are you going to do? Look at LACN and apply to some internships! Awesome, I’ll meet you there. Don’t forget to look at some on MOJO, they are cool too.

As always, stop by the CSO 2-5PM if you have any questions or want to talk to a counselor, they are chill. Check it y’all
