Shoes? I just wanna dance: Phusia Winter Term Internship

Do you like to dance? You know I do. Well at this bomb  J-term internship, you won’t necessarily be showcasing your Dougieing skills every day of the week, but you will be working with an awesome Vermont start-up that will soon revolutionize the dance world. Phusia is the new and hip and freaking sweet way to bring  fun back to the dance studio. Phusia needs the brains and barnacles of Midd students to help them out with designing their website, marketing their brand, and creating an image of Phusia that no one can ignore. If you can help with one of those things, apply! Interested? Duh. Check out the internship posting on MOJO…NOW!

Professionalism: Do It

When you are hired for a sweetastic job or internship you are probably super stoaked because you know you will do amazing work. You’ve got the brains, the muscle, and the swag to be an absolute boss. Now, not that I want to let any wind out of your sails, but I want to bring to your attention one of the most important words of the real world that new members of the workforce seem to forget or overlook, PROFESSIONALISM. It’s a sweet six syllable word, I know. However, when you are hired and get paid, you are a professional (it’s baller) but “with great power comes great responsibility” (Spidey 64), and employers right now are looking for a little bit more professionalism because they say recent college graduates aren’t giving it to them. Here’s an article that overviews some employers’ discontents:

Turkey Day and Goldman Internships

Tear the roof off? Yes, we’re going to tear the roof of this sucker because we got a real type of thing going down, getting down and there’s a whole lot of rhythm going down in the CSO. In case you didn’t know, the CSO got the funk, because we got to have that funk and with this funk we are just posting up a storm of internships. Due to this funky fact, funky meaning amazing that is, even though we can all smell that delicious turkey and stuffing, you need to keep your eyes peeled on MOJO! Why? Yes, Goldman is coming, again, and for you fine sportsfans who plan to study abroad in the spring, get your funk in gear because deadlines will expire in your food coma recovery stages (that’s pretty soon).

As many of you know from some of my previous posts on Goldman Sachs, they are quite the investment bank, one of the most prestigious on the Street. There are endless possibilities there. But if you want a shot at the title, you got to bring your “A” game because you are competing against the best and brightest for only a limited number of spots. So what are my recommendations to best prepare? Definitely read up on Goldman and know the position you are applying for! If you are truly interested in finance, hopefully you have something to show for it and don’t be afraid to let them know. It is really all about just getting your foot in the door, you just want to get that interview so you can show those scary Goldman folks what you are really made of.

All of this talk of food and Goldman is making me hungry and subsequently I got a fever, and the only prescription…is more cow bell (and where you can find the Goldman applications). As many of you, I am a huge fan of caveats, so I shall give you one. Goldman seems to always make the application process…interesting, but it is test of your attention to detail. So, as usual, search “Goldman” on MOJO to find a list of the opportunities catered for Midd students. Then you will notice that the application process is a two-stepper. After you submit your resume on MOJO, you need to go to the careers portion of the Goldman Sachs site, register, and then fill out the specific application of the position that you are looking for. There are several positions not posted on MOJO that are available on Goldman’s site, and you are encouraged to apply to as many as you are interested in. But just keep in mind that the Midd friendly ones are only those listed on MOJO.

Got all of that funk? Great! Fantabulous. As usual, if you have any questions/comments/concerns/songs I should reference stop by the CSO for Drop-ins 2-5 PM Mon-Fri or call the P-Funk hotline at 1-800-COW-BELL (that was a joke, but really stop in for Drop-ins) Have a HAPPY TURKEY DAY!

John Wall and Dougie Inspired Sports Internships: Part 1 of the Internship Series

Just the other day, NBA and Washington Wizards rookie sensation John Wall fresh out of The University of Kentucky (known for its love, peace, and chicken grease) made his debut to the Verizon Center in DC to the infamous song “Teach Me How To Dougie,” and oh yes, the dude did the dance to go along with it. Now, I thought that I had some pretty fresh moves, but gosh-darnit this dood can break it down! The man Dougied all the way across the court, it was unreal! So what does this have to do with internships? Well, since my brain is so fantastical, when I saw this dance and basketball guru exhibit his moves, it clicked…there are hundreds of kids at Club Midd who love sports, so wouldn’t they like an internship with their favorite sports franchise? I think yes.

Lucky for y’all (love that conjunction), we have a whole book, a physical book (234 pages, it’s legit), chock full of various sports internship opportunities. It’s literally called “The Sports Internship Book” and it tastes delicious. You can browse for opportunities by Major league and Minor league franchise, by conference, by college athletic departments,  or by teams the Oregon Ducks have trounced this year…well, maybe not the last one, but the bottom line is that there are a lot of opportunities to choose from!

How do you sink your teeth into internships with the Chicago Bulls, Jacksonville Jags, or John Wall’s Wizards? Obviously, you can drop into the CSO and check out the book we have in the CSO Library of Dreams. OR you can check out the fancy shmancy Midd-Only Resources page on the CSO website. Once you are there, just scroll down link “The Internship Series Online: Internship Directories,” follow the steps, and you are golden.

Who doesn’t like caveats? I know you do so I will have to give you a few to chew…this “Internships Series Book Thing” is not quite like MOJO or LACN. It’s not a database in the same sense, per se, in that you can’t upload your resume and cover letter right to it. What it does have is information on the potential internships available and how you can find out more about them and eventually apply to them. It’s pretty awesome.

That’s all y’all, but until next Bat time, be safe and happy hunting. As always, stop in for some Drop Ins! 2-5 PM Mon-Fri. Love, peace and chicken grease.

And for those who haven’t seen the video,  here is my inspiration for this post:

John Wall and Dougie Inspired Internships

Finance? Goldman? Internships?

So on one of my days off from the CSO Lab I was browsing through MOJO, obviously, to see what was cooking. I was searching through the Midd-Friendly Jobs and Internships page and notice a high volume of job postings for a little and unassuming financial institution called Goldman Sachs & Co. As you may have noticed, however, these postings are in fact Midd-Recruited Jobs and this, what you fine delicious people are reading, is an Internships blog. So why am I writing this you may ask? Well, because Goldman not only offers awesome jobs in Finance but they also will be posting internships before you know it. And for you who are planning to study abroad in the spring, those internship applications will be posted A LOT sooner than you think.

Teach Me How To Find an Internship: The Internships.com Chronicle

When I tell people that I work at the Career Services Office, aka where your dreams come true, a lot of times people be like…

“Smooth!” (That’s me)

“What?” (I say)

“Can you teach me how to DOUGIE?” (Do Outstanding Undercover and Granular Internship Expeditions)

You know why? Because all my people love me…hopefully. But on a serious note, stepping outside the Oregon Swag District, many people DO ask me how they can find great internships (and how to Dougie, sometimes). First and foremost, I always first direct them to MOJO, which you all should be visiting regularly! But as many of you party people probably expect and know, there are many other awesome resources out there to help you find the internship of your dreams. One of those resources is Internships.com

The Big Guide to Living and Working Overseas

Whether you’re kickin’ in the door looking for that juicy job or sippin champagne because your thirstay, big things are poppin’ overseas and if you are looking for a job over there, well, you should probably consult the Big Guide to Living and Working Overseas. As the title of this fabulous resource might suggest, this is a big deal and can give you some sweet deets (details, insight, knowhow) into what it is like to live abroad, work abroad, and dabble with another culture across the pond. From firsthand experience studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, probably the best city in the world, an abroad experience is unlike anything else you will experience in your life. So if you are thinking about an internship, job, or anything else overseas, you have my full support and that is saying something (obviously).

So what is the Big Guide to Living and Working Overseas? Well, there is one BIG guide, more like a textbook actually, along with several quick guides that can help you answer any and all of your questions about what it’s like “over there.” Similar to the Vault Guide, this is a Midd Only resource, so other non Midd bros and fine ladies don’t have access to this plethora of delicious information.

Before writing this bodacious blog post, I did a little due diligence (I’ve heard people use that term before, sounds professional) on the site and how it work. After the initial sign up song and dance, you can check off what your goals and aspirations are for going abroad, whether it be intern, work, study, travel or volunteer. Big Guide then shows you a list of all the contents and information it has on its site and which specific guide, chapter or alternate resource will best inform you on how to make your goals and dreams a reality!

How do you get to this guide? As I said before, it is one of the Midd-Only resources we have. To get there, go to the CSO page and click “Resources and Toolkit.” From there choose “Midd-Only Resources” and away you go!

Any questions contact CSO or stop in for a drop-in! Mon-Fri 2-5 PM! Over and out.

What do I wear?!

I am sure that all we avid job and internship gurus know what the proper interview attire is, Nantucket reds, purple penny loafers, a cut off white tee, and a cheeseburgers in paradise tie. Correctamundo? Perhaps not. As brought to my attention by the bodacious Carl Daddy himself, most lay-bros and fine ladies don’t know or at least are unsure of what to wear to interviews. My question to you is what do you want to get out of the interview? You want to impress, baby. So how are you going to dress? That’s right, to impress.

So have you ever thought about doing an Internship over J-Term? Of course you have! Silly me, you all practically LIVE on this blog and have read all of the posts about super terrific Internships over Winter Term.  But what if you want to participate in an internship AND want to live on campus!? Sadly, you can’t…just joshin with ya! Alright, not really too funny, at all, but for real, if you want to stay in Midd and dabble with an Internship, you bet your cupcakes you can. There are actually a whopping 9 Internships, yea I said it I said it, 9 Internships for J-Term! In all different fields too. You can be on a board, save lives, do some REAL work for your community, and experience a ton more awesome things. Oh and just a reminder, the DEADLINE for MOST Winter Term ’11 Internships is FRIDAY OCTOBER, 8.

However, there is one little caveat I want to point out to you all fine and lovely people, in order to LIVE on campus while doing an internship, you HAVE to be getting credit for your internship. What does that mean? Well, that means you have to fill out the application for credit. Where is this mystical application? Luckily the beautiful folks here at CSO put that application on MOJO. Conveniently, it’s called Winter Term ’11 Intern APPLICATION for CREDIT. So fill that beast out if you want credit for your internship, no matter if you’re doing an internship in Midd or not. That application is due October 22.

Winter Term Internships in PR

As I know all you sportsfans read, printed out, and hung my previous post about Winter Term Internships, I thought I would do a part two and enlighten your noggins by informing you about some specific hot potato internships for J-term.  PR, Public Relations, is where it is at…at least on MOJO. So what the “h” is PR anywho? Well, as our trusted friend Wikipedia puts it, “PR is a field concerned with maintaining public image for high-profile people, commercial businesses and organizations, non-profit associations or programs.” In lay-bro terms, PR firms use different mediums, print, digital, broadcasts, to help increase publicity, generate awareness, or save face for a certain organization or person. I like to think of PR, in a not so official way, as an alternative, cheaper, means of advertising because it is the PR firms job to let people know what is going own with that firm. From my own knowledge and experience (observations, really), PR party people are very clever with their words, they are paid to say the right thing, at the right time, and through the right means.  So if you like to write and are an excellent communicator, then you might want to consider looking into PR. For more detailed qualifications, here is what one employer listed:
