Finance? Goldman? Internships?

So on one of my days off from the CSO Lab I was browsing through MOJO, obviously, to see what was cooking. I was searching through the Midd-Friendly Jobs and Internships page and notice a high volume of job postings for a little and unassuming financial institution called Goldman Sachs & Co. As you may have noticed, however, these postings are in fact Midd-Recruited Jobs and this, what you fine delicious people are reading, is an Internships blog. So why am I writing this you may ask? Well, because Goldman not only offers awesome jobs in Finance but they also will be posting internships before you know it. And for you who are planning to study abroad in the spring, those internship applications will be posted A LOT sooner than you think.

If you do not know about Goldman Sachs and are interested in some area of the financial sector, this is a good time to find out about the firm, along with others like it. Remember our friend the Vault and all of its great information? Well, Vault ranks Goldman Sachs & Co. number 1 in prestige among other investment banks and number 1 overall for the top 50 investment banks. I think Goldman is a pretty sweet place to work. Here’s a little bit more on the company itself:

Goldman Sachs provides investment banking, securities and investment management services to a substantial and diversified client base that includes corporations, financial institutions, governments and high-net-worth individuals.  Widely considered the most prestigious name in investment banking activities, Goldman is headquartered in New York, and maintains offices in London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Hong Kong and other major financial centers around the world.  It employs about 38,500 people worldwide.

That’s what they had written in the Vault guide about the company. But beyond the fact that the company pulled in about $50 Billion in revenue last year, I think that it is important to know what some of the people who work at the company have to say about it. Those who work there say that Goldman is:

“Supportive and respectful management”

“Working with a group of very smart, talented and motivated individuals”

“Learning opportunities are truly endless”

Those are the positives, but as you know, there are always some negatives too. Here are some of the downers about Goldman:

“Public perception can be frustrating”

“Long hours and pressure”

“Red tape from vigorous compliance and conflict-check processes”

People always have their opinions, good and bad, and there is no such thing as a Utopian workplace because we would all be working there. The bottom line is that Goldman Sachs is a giant amount financial institutions and a company that has a lot of close connections to Middlebury. If you are a senior, hopefully this is a reminder to check out those job postings. If you are a sophomore or junior, keep your eyes peeled for those internship postings by Goldman and start the information reconnaissance NOW! It never hurts to start early. Also, if you are looking at Goldman, chances are you are going to be interested in some of the other big banks, so why not start researching them now? It will only help. Also, back to what I mentioned before, if you are planning to study abroad next spring, most banks offer an accelerated recruiting process to accommodate people like you (so nice of them, I know). But what that means is that you really need to be on the lookout for those postings!

As always, for the latest jobs and internships for you lovely Middlebury folks, check out MOJO. Stop by the CSO for drop ins too. They are err day (everyday) Mon-Fri 2-5 PM.
