Bernie Sanders believes there is something profoundly wrong with the income distribution in the United States right now. The US is the wealthiest country in the history of the world, but the majority of this wealth is controlled by only a few individuals. The United States currently has more income inequality than any other major developed country in the world, and the gap from everyone else to the wealthiest is wider than at any time since the 1920s. The top 0.1% owns as much as the bottom 90%, which Senator Sanders finds abhorrent. The system is rigged to benefit the billionaire class. People working minimum wage jobs cannot sustain their families, and many people struggle with student loan debt for a long time after their graduation. As president, Senator Sanders will fight to benefit the middle and working classes, by taxing Wall Street and the wealthiest people. He will raise the minimum wage to a livable wage of $15 an hour by 2020. As well, Sanders wants to make tuition free for all public universities and colleges in the country to alleviate student debt. He wants to give more time off for employees—both for health and dependent care. Sanders wants to restore the middle class, and to reduce income inequality in the United States.
Many people have noted how Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are polar opposites, yet both have been able to garner a strong following. Trump is a billionaire and Sanders’ platform is built on taking on the billionaire class. This video pokes fun at Bernie Sanders use of statistics when he discusses income inequity, however it also brings attention to Bernie’s platform.
