An NPR story about Bernie Sanders’ stance on gun control is titled, “Bernie Sanders Walks A Fine Line On Gun Control.” Sanders’ stance on gun control is vastly more conservative than his views on other issues. He argues that his stance on gun control is related to representing rural communities. However, given recent discourse on mass shootings, his platform might be alarming to some Bernie supporters.
“I can understand if some Democrats or Republicans represent an urban area where people don’t hunt, don’t do target practice, they’re not into guns. But in my state, people go hunting and do target practice. Talking about cultural divides in this country, you know, it is important for people in urban America to understand that families go out together and kids go out together and they hunt and enjoy the outdoors and that is a lifestyle that should not be condemned.”
The frustration among the left-leaning public in regards to Bernie’s stance on guns is how the issue of gun control is about more than mass shootings. Additionally it is about gun culture. Some people might ask why target practice is a lifestyle for families. Urban America is not simply condemning how rural people decide to live their lives but examining how target practice at a young age might promote an overall culture of violence.
