Bernie Sanders’ Twitter, @berniesanders, is direct. The language he uses is aggressive and straightforward; some tweets even sound like a call to action:
He does not back away from pointing out injustices, and explaining why he believes he could be the person to fix them. He often starts tweets with the phrase “I am running for president because…” and then talks about a problem with the current system. Sanders’ Twitter conveys the same message as his campaign slogan: “A political revolution is coming,” in that he seems to constantly be suggesting that the U.S. political system must be changed, and he is the candidate to do it. As Sanders is the underdog in this campaign, he has more liberty to say whatever he wants than candidates who are trying to play to the moderate vote.
Sanders also made waves by live-tweeting the Republican debates. His tweets were extremely sarcastic: Sanders extensively made fun of the candidates, suggesting that the late Ronald Reagan, who was frequently referred to in the GOP candidates’ answers, would make a better candidate than any of them. However, in fitting with his angry old man character, Sanders tuned out midway through the debate, asking if anyone knew when the debate would end, and then tweeting the following.
The #BernieSanders hashtag consists mostly of positive tweets about the candidate. Only a few are insulting or disagree with the candidate. Many of the tweets also used the hashtag #FeelTheBern, which was started by Sanders’ supporters, rather than the campaign itself (though the campaign has began to use the Feel The Bern slogan).
