Geriatric Psychiatry Department at McLean Hospital Internship Positions

Geriatric Psychiatry Department at McLean Hospital is seeking student visitors for three research labs: The Technology and Aging Lab, The Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program, and the Mood and Cognition in the Aging Lab. 

This internship is geared towards students who are actively enrolled in an undergraduate program and are interested in gaining clinical and research experience. Student Visitors are primarily responsible for assisting with lab related procedures that include but are not limited to data entry, patient escort, transcription, and literature review compositions.  

Internship Lab Placement Options:

The Technology and Aging Lab, directed by Dr. Ipsit Vahia, investigates the applications of technological interventions to enhance clinical care across the lifespan. Current research focuses on the application of electronic media into psychotherapy, wearables to track symptom changes from medication adjustments in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), applications of virtual reality to enhance mindfulness in older adults with mood disorders, AI-based phenotyping for mood disorders and monitoring of medication side effects for patients involved in clinical trials for ADRD/MCI, and augmented reality to supplement activities of daily living (ADLs) for patients with ADRD/MCI.

The Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program, directed by Dr. Ipsit Vahia, addresses cutting edge research questions in the areas of dementia and mood disorders using new neuroimaging techniques, clinicopathological correlations, and other study methods. Current studies include a number of Industry-Sponsored Alzheimer’s Disease clinical drug trials, longitudinal analyses of older adults with depression and bipolar disorder, and Investigator-Initiated clinical trials focused on treatment interventions for behavioral symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and neuroimaging studies.

The Mood and Cognition in the Aging Lab, directed by Dr. Sara Weisenbach, investigates how problems such as cognitive dysfunction and depression symptomatology relate to the ability to regulate emotions during late middle and older age. Participants take part in an interview to gather information about medical and psychiatric history, a physical exam and blood draw, cognitive testing, a functional MRI scan, and questionnaires. Some parts of this study can be performed virtually, and we are enrolling patients at Stony Brook University who are unable to attend in-person visits at this time due to the pandemic. The overall aim of this study is to use the knowledge that we gain from this study to develop better interventions for emotion dysregulation and depression in older people. We are enrolling participants with and without a history of depression.

 THE HORSESHOE FARM FELLOWSHIP

Unique community based “Gap Year” opportunity for those interested in medicine, healthcare, community health, public health, or other community based service careers.

 Students who are selected for this competitive one year (13 month) Fellowship will live in Greensboro, Alabama and will work alongside other outstanding “Horseshoe Farm Fellows” selected from around the country.  Selected Fellows will have the opportunity to be directly involved in nearly all aspects of the leadership and management of this innovative community based non-profit organization and its service programs for children, mentally disabled adults, and elderly members of the community.  Selected Fellows will also have the opportunity to:

  * Learn about effective engagement with and work with a community.  Learn how to effectively develop and lead social entrepreneurial initiatives in a community.

 *   Help lead, manage, and provide direct service in an innovative housing and companionship program for women with mental disorders.

*   Help manage and run several mentoring, tutoring, and activities programs for children in the community.

*   Help lead, manage, and develop programs for a new “Community Clubhouse” for vulnerable members of our community.

*   Learn about (through weekly readings and discussions) health care systems issues including the structure and financing of the U.S. health care system, health care law and ethics, healthcare economics, the history of the U.S. health care system, and health policy.

*   Work directly with M.D., M.B.A. physician who is Director and primary teacher in project and Fellowship.  Have opportunity to work in and learn about rural community hospital settings, to shadow other physicians and health professionals, and learn about rural healthcare and health systems.

This opportunity is geared primarily to students with very strong leadership potential and with an interest in community based service careers (especially but not exclusively those interested in medicine or healthcare).

The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice

The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice  is designed to foster the advancement of social justice through participation in health care advocacy work that focuses on the unique challenges facing many low-income and minority communities. Through this fellowship, Families USA hopes to expand the pool of talented social justice advocates from underrepresented economic, racial, and ethnic minority groups, including from the American Indian & Alaska Native, Asian American, Black/African American, Latino, and Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander communities. The Wellstone Fellow plays an integral role in the work of Families USA’s Field and Minority Health Initiatives Departments. The Wellstone Fellow’s primary responsibilities include assisting in the organization of conferences and trainings for advocates, community leaders, and journalists; drafting talking points, blogs, policy briefs fact sheets, and other publications; and developing content for the Families USA website and email lists. During the year, the Fellow will learn about health reform implementation, minority health, Medicaid, Medicare, and other important health policy issues. At the same time, the Wellstone Fellow will develop an understanding of the tactics and strategies used in state-based consumer health advocacy organizations and will work directly with our network of state consumer health advocates and organizations.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate an interest in health care policy as a tool for reducing racial and ethnic health disparities and in using organizing and advocacy skills to achieve social change. Applicants should also demonstrate a commitment to contributing to social justice advocacy following their year of hands-on experience as a fellow.

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice

The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice  was created in 2005 by Philippe Villers, Founder and President of Families USA. Each year, the Villers Fellow works in our health policy department and assists our organization’s efforts to improve access to health coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income and other vulnerable communities. Specifically, the Villers Fellow will conduct research on a range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to publications that are relevant to health reform implementation and other health policy issues.
In creating the fellowship, Mr. Villers aspired to develop a network of young leaders who share a passion for health care justice. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to health care justice work following their year as a fellow. Additionally, in order to encourage the development of future leaders, Villers Fellows must commit to mentoring at least one person over the course of their careers.
