Role Description

This undergraduate Internship opportunity has been referred to us by Middlebury trustee Helen Riess P’13, ’15. Dr. Riess is founder, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Empathetics Inc., a company that provides web-based and blended empathy-training and related relational-skills solutions for health care. In addition, Dr. Riess is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. 

Empathetics, Inc., was founded in 2012 to provide innovative empathy and interpersonal skills training through an advanced e-learning platform, live training workshops and consulting services for medical professionals and non-clinical staff. Empathetics leverages new, scientifically proven methods that enhance human relationships, increase patient and customer satisfaction, and make professional practices more effective, efficient, and enjoyable.

This internship is ideally suited to Middlebury students interested in the e-learning industry, marketing, the technology, businesses providing social impact, communications, business applications of advancing social skills in the health professions. The Empathetics Internship is a truly interdisciplinary opportunity for someone interested in the e-learning platforms, marketing, and technology within a social enterprise startup.

The Opportunity: The intern will have an opportunity to take Empathetics courses and learn to speak knowledgeably about the science of empathy. The intern will develop essential skills in helping Empathetics leverage its social impact by learning to work with popular Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms and learning management systems (LMS) that deliver the Empathetics programs. The intern will learn essential skills for client engagement, business development, data migration, and healthcare communications. Reporting directly to Dr. Helen Riess and our leadership team, the intern will have an opportunity to work with staff to contribute to marketing and business development, learn to navigate CRM platforms (Salesforce; Hubspot) and assist with technical aspects of the e-learning company. 

The Commitment:

This is a three-month remote work opportunity that offers 20 hours per week, a flexible schedule,

and requires daily engagement with the team.

Start Date: 6/1/23

End Date: 9/1/23

Requirements: The intern must demonstrate an interest in the mission of Empathetics, timeliness and professionalism.

This internship is funded with a CCI award of $4,000.00. If you are offered and accept this internship, please be aware that your funding for this position is provided by CCI, and therefore you will be required to complete funded internship paperwork. Typically, seniors graduating in May and those who have not been enrolled for Spring ’23 are not eligible for CCI sponsored internships, but occasional exceptions are made. Students planning to transfer in the Fall are also not eligible.
