NOW Edit-a-thon is this Friday!
Description: The Newspapers on Wikipedia edit-a-thon will be held on October 26, 12:00-4:00 pm PT | 3:00-7:00 pm ET. The event, which will be hosted in the Wilson Media Lab and at the DLC Design Space in Monterey, will encourage Middlebury students, staff, and faculty to create Wikipedia pages for local Vermont and California newspapers. Participants can choose which roles they want to play (researcher, writer, proofer/closer) and we will have librarians assisting those who are taking on the “researcher” roles. BONUS: there will be pizza, refreshments and there will be other swag for participants as well!

Samantha Weald, WikiEdu Outreach Manager reflects on her September campus visit with Middlebury

On September 24th of this year, we had the pleasure of hosting Wiki Edu Outreach Manager, Samantha Weald, for a campus visit to the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California. The event was also available via Zoom for colleagues in Vermont. The event brought together over twenty students, faculty, and staff from across Middlebury to learn more about how Wiki Edu supports instructors in designing and implementing research based course assignments that engage students in editing, writing, or translating articles on Wikipedia.
According to total traffic and unique visitor information maintained by Alexa as the fifth most visited site on the web, Wikipedia is unquestionably a critical public source for access to encyclopedic information.
Samantha published a blog post called Teaching and learning in the public sphere with Wikipedia on the Wiki Edu website that describes her experience facilitating the event, and some of her take-aways.

Amy Collier wrote a blog post about the importance of editing on Wikipedia and the impact it can have, called, “Why write for and edit Wikipedia as part of NOW? Some thoughts on impact.”
It describes her experience running a similar event to the upcoming Newspapers on Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and how she has wrestled with the question of impact. She lists three thoughts she has on the meaningful and long-term impacts of the edit-a-thons, which include:
- We are filling a problematic data void.
- We are helping diversify voices on Wikipedia.
- We are teaching/learning essential digital literacies.

Tianxing “Star” Tang
Star is a DLINQ Intern pursuing a degree in Translation and Localization Management at the Institute.
She is available for consultations in areas including Multimedia Production, Presentation & Graphic Design, and Online Presence.
Daniel Klemonski
Daniel is a DLINQ Intern pursuing degrees in history and economics at the College.
As an Intern, he is increasing his skills in the Adobe suite and WordPress.
