The Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory is located at Massachusetts General Hospital. Their past and current study coordinators have had the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to research focused on improving standard of care for total joint replacement patients. They also have opportunities for authorship and mentorship by orthopedic surgeons, with whom they work with on a daily basis. For instance, the study coordinator who started at the lab in the summer of 2015 is the first author of 5 manuscripts and co-author of 12 other manuscripts and 32 abstracts, 4 of which he presented at international academic meetings. The study coordinators who began working with us in 2016 have co-authored 10 manuscripts (4 first-authored) and 16 abstracts. The research coordinator who began last summer (2017) will have 2 manuscripts and 6 abstracts to include in his upcoming medical school application. The 2017 summer research intern, an F-1 OPT STEM visa holder, will start as the full time study coordinator this June. This is a fantastic research opportunity for interested Middlebury students. Clinical Research INTERN Position at the Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory
The pioneering efforts of the Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory (HOL) have positively impacted the
quality of life of many millions of patients through innovation and evidence-based medicine since its inception in 1969. The
mission of the laboratory is to improve patient outcomes through materials science and clinical research with an emphasis
on total hip and knee replacement surgery. The HOL is part of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the Massachusetts
General Hospital.
An eight to ten-week Research Intern position with a stipend is available from June-August 2018. The internship will include
a structured introduction into the design and execution of international, multicenter clinical studies focused on the longterm
follow-up of patients with a total hip or knee replacement. Interns will also have the opportunity to gain clinical
experience through interaction with the Orthopaedic Surgery Department, to contribute to relevant clinical research, and to
conduct an independent research project. Upon successful completion of the internship, the intern may be considered for
the full-time clinical study coordinator position that is planned for June 2019. Learn more about the position here.
