Dear Colleagues,

Middlebury may nominate two members of the faculty for the annual competition for Summer Stipends sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Each stipend provides $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing on a humanities project, “advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both.” (See eligibility information below).

If you would like to be considered for a College nomination, please send a description of your proposed project and a current C.V. to me (with cc to Lynn Dunton) by email by Friday, July 29.

You should consult the NEH summer stipend guidelines and prepare a proposal of an appropriate length and format to be forwarded to NEH in the event that you are selected as a nominee. A selection panel will then select the College’s two nominees. The nominees must, in turn, submit their final applications electronically to NEH before September 29.

The guidelines for the NEH Summer Stipend program are available at the following website:  http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/stipends.html

The website includes a section of Frequently Asked Questions and sample proposals that you may review.

Feel free to contact Franci Farnsworth at the Sponsored Research Office to see copies of successful NEH Summer Stipend proposals or for other assistance.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, or foreign nationals who have lived continuously in the U.S. for three years prior to the October 1 deadline.

Stipend recipients may not have held major fellowships or grants during or since the 2008-2009 academic year. (College funded leaves are not considered major grants for these purposes nor are other summer research grants.)  Grants may not be used to support work toward a degree, but one need not hold an advanced degree to apply. Recipients must devote themselves full time to their projects for the two months of the fellowship.

Applicants meeting any of the following criteria do not have to be nominated by the College and may apply directly to NEH:  part-time faculty or faculty with appointments terminating by the summer of 2012 or emeritus faculty or non-faculty staff members who will not be teaching during the 2011-2012 academic year.  Contact NEH to verify your eligibility to apply directly (without college nomination).

Thanks,

Jim
