Sunday Morning Maintenance

On Sunday, March 3rd, during downtime we will be changing the url of our WordPress instance from “sites.middlebury.edu” to “sites.middlebury.edu.”

This work will begin at 8:00AM. It is expected that the change will take approximately one hour. During this time the web server will be shut down and you will not be able to read, comment on, or edit content hosted on WordPress.

The following message was sent to WordPress site owners on Thursday, the 22nd:

Thank you to everyone who participated in our survey on the change from “blogs” to “sites.”

On Sunday, February 24th, during downtime we will be changing the url of our WordPress instance from “sites.middlebury.edu” to “sites.middlebury.edu.”

What you need to do: NOTHING
This change only affects the url in the address bar of a browser, you do not need to move any content in your site.

Will your links still work? YES
We will be setting up a redirect so that anyone trying to visit a site using “sites.middlebury.edu” will be redirected to “sites.middlebury.edu.”

Can I still track visits to my site using Google Analytics? YES
Last January we made a change to have all Middlebury web applications crawled using one Google Analytic account. You will simply need to add the “sites.middlebury.edu” address in your segments.

Will this change my site or url if I use another address? Like middlab.middlebury.edu or southchinasea.org? NO
Sites that have their own url, their own subdomain, will not be affected by this change.

Please send questions about this change to Ian McBride.

WordPress Plugin Spotlight: Embed Google Docs in your Posts

This is an ongoing series of posts to highlight some of the features that we have installed in WordPress that you might like to use on your site, but might not know are available.

This plugin requires little in the way of explanation. If you have a document hosted on Google Docs or Google Drive and want to embed it in a blog post or page, enable the Google Docs Shortcode plugin in your site’s administration interface. This plugin supports embedding documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and forms. You can use some shortcode like this to add your documents:

[gdoc link="LINK_TO_GOOGLE_DOC" height="600"]

Documentation on getting the link for the shortcode is available at that link. As an example, here’s are presentation slides from a session I gave on our Drupal architecture:

FakeAV a leading threat in 2013

What is FakeAV: FakeAV is a virus designed to look like real anti-virus software in the hopes that the victim will click a link and download a malicious package. The malware often does not stop there. Many FakeAV packages continue the con by disabling true anti-virus packages claiming that they are harming the system they are intended to protect. These viruses come in many forms but are well crafted to present like a trusted virus prevention source.
