WebPrint Issues

Our WebPrint services should currently be viewed as an unstable resource as over the past few days the system has repeatedly stopped, requiring our attention.  System staff are aware of the issue and are working with the vendor to resolve matters.  Please note that printing directly from labs, public computers, and faculty office spaces result in the fastest and most reliable printing (see option 1 at http://go.middlebury.edu/howtoprint).

7/20/17 Update: The PaperCut fix is coming out in the next update. We are waiting for the developers to give us a time frame for when they expect it to be released.

Middlebury Campus Moves to Office 2016 — Are You There Yet?

MS Office 2016 logoIs your college-owned computer already running Microsoft Office 2016?  If so, you’re all set; read no further (unless you hate to miss anything!)  Not sure?  Here’s how you can find your version information.

If you have yet to upgrade your version of Office, it’s time to seize the moment and take care of this important detail so you’ll be using the recommended version.  Office 2016 is available for college-owned computers through self-service installs that can be done at your convenience. You’ll find installation instructions — and some great resource links — on our Office 2016 wiki page.  If you’d like assistance or have questions about the Office upgrade process, please submit a Helpdesk ticket and we’ll be happy to lend a hand.

Reluctant to upgrade?  You may be relieved to hear that you won’t need to relearn everything you already know.  The main changes are a streamlined look that provides the same experience on different devices, such as phones and tablets, and better integration with OneDrive for file storage.  Office 2016 is also needed so you can use Multi-Factor Authentication with Outlook.

But don’t take my word for it — check out How to Learn More about Office 2016 and convince yourself that it’s time to move on up!

Adobe Creative Cloud 2017 Now Available

Since the release of the new Adobe Creative Cloud 2017 suite, there have been many requests to install it on college-owned computers and in the public labs for teaching.  We are pleased to let you know that it is now available.

Current Adobe users will need to remove older application versions from their college computers first, then install the new 2017 versions to maintain compatibility with our labs and other colleagues.  To simplify this upgrade process, self service options are now available for both Mac and Windows college-owned machines.

Here are the upgrade steps for college-owned computers:

Windows:

  1. Review details about how to use the self service website.
  2. Login at http://go.middlebury.edu/kss, click Want Software?, then click the link for Install CCUninstaller to remove all older Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
  3. This will bring you to a download history page, wait 10 minutes, check your programs list under your start menu, to see if your Adobe apps are gone.
  4. Reboot your computer.
  5. Login again at http://go.middlebury.edu/kss, click Want Software?, then click the link for Install Adobe Photoshop (Indesign or Illustrator).  Allow at least 15 minutes for the install to begin.

Mac:

  1. Review details about how to find and use the Self Service utility.
  2. Copy the Plug-ins folder from your computer’s Application folder (e.g., /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC 2015/Plug-ins/) in advance, as the upgrade process may remove existing ones.
  3. Launch the Service Service utility.
  4. In the search field (top right), type 2017, then press Return to show the new offerings.
  5. Click the Install button to run Adobe CC Uninstall – through 2017.0 to remove all older Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
  6. Reboot your computer.
  7. Launch Self Service once again, then search for 2017.
  8. Click Install to run the application installers you need.

Notes:  Adobe Acrobat DC will need to be re-installed if you had it before; it is available through Self Service as well.

Feel free to contact the Helpdesk during our open hours if you happen to hit any road bumps.

“Cloudiness” Made Clear (a.k.a. Making Sense of Midd’s Cloud Storage)

cloudsWhen you hear the words “cloud,” “sync,” and “local” all in one sentence do your eyes glaze over?  You are not alone.  Please take a look at our new handout (easily revisited using http://go.middlebury.edu/cloudpic) to help you understand Middlebury’s cloud storage and some key points about its use.

Pssst…  If you find our handout helpful, please don’t tell your friends about it — let them learn the hard way, eh?

New Cloud File Storage: Welcome to Your New “Home”!

cloudsMicrosoft’s OneDrive file storage system has just been turned on for all staff, faculty, and students on the Middlebury campus and at MIIS.  Now that our e-mail has successfully moved to the cloud, we turn next to Middfiles “home” folders.  Don’t panic!  You’re not in this alone — we’re here to help.  To take advantage of the many benefits of cloud storage, you’ll want to begin by moving the contents of your “home” folder from Middfiles to OneDrive.  (“Orgs” and “Classes” folders on Middfiles are staying put for now.)  If you are already using cloud storage through Google, you may certainly use this service instead.  Our goal is for all of you to complete the move of your Middfiles “home” folders to the cloud by the end of this year.

In the upcoming weeks ITS will be scheduling training for partners across the Midd community so we can work together to assist anyone who needs a hand with this exciting, new service.  We will also provide documentation, online tutorials, and workshops designed to get you moving your files quickly and easily, using methods that work best for you.  Watch your email for upcoming details.

Can’t wait to learn more – and perhaps give things a try?  Take a look at http://go.middlebury.edu/onedrivehelp.
