DrupalCon 2010 Trip Report Day 1

Hello from San Francisco! I was waylaid in Chicago and missed the morning presentations, but I wanted to share what I’ve learned so far at DrupalCon. First, a quick bullet point summary for those who don’t want to dive into the details:

  • Drupal now powers over 1% of the total websites, closely tied with Joomla. WordPress powers about 8.5%.
  • Drupal 7’s forms will allow us to add conditional form fields that appear for the user without requiring a postback to the server. See the (very relevent for us) example here: http://d7.drupalexamples.info/form_example/states
  • Drupal 7’s User Experience (UX) team has made improvements to the interface that on our site is called the “Edit Console”. You can read more about their project at their website: http://www.d7ux.org/content/
  • We can improve our site performance by moving functionality out of the template files and into theme functions. Basically, the way we currently do things, we have to read a file off the server’s disk every time anyone loads anything on the site. By using theme functions instead of template functions we avoid this disk read and dramatically improve performance.
  • You can watch many of today’s presentations at http://sf2010.drupal.org/conference/schedule for free! Many of those without video have their slides up. The presentations from Monday are at the bottom of the page since, at the time I’m posting this, they’ve already happened and aren’t as interesting to the conference attendees.
  • Monster Menus, the module the Amherst developed that lets you add sub-pages and manage permissions is a few weeks away from being refactored to eliminate any Amherst-dependent code. The version we’re currently running assumes that Amherst’s version of Banner exists, which we’ve had to work around. The new version will make this easy for us and open MM up for other schools to use.

Saving your data to MIDDFILES

The Technology Support Helpdesk would like to take this opportunity to again remind the campus user community to please save all personal and work related files to their MIDDFILES personal space (on a Windows computer this would be your U drive in File Explorer).  We have had a rush of computers recently come into the Helpdesk with failed hard drives.  In some cases we were unable to retrieve any information from those failed drives, leaving the user with no means of data recovery.  The risks you assume by not using MIDDFILES are significant when a hardware failure occurs on your computer.

To protect yourself and your data it is highly recommend you immediately start relocating your data to your MIDDFILES personal account.  You may visit the Technology Help and Support website (shortcut: go.middlebury.edu/helpdesk) for more information on how to use MIDDFILES.  You may also want to visit our Wiki resource link for proper MIDDFILES and DFS usage:  Backing Up My Files.

Welcome Dennis Hadley!

Please join me in welcoming Dennis Hadley to LIS.  Dennis started with us on April 12th and has assumed the position of Senior Technology Specialist at the Technology Support Helpdesk.  Dennis comes to us from Paul Smith’s College in NY and brings a wealth of experience in higher-ed support and service to our helpdesk group and to our users.  He has already taken the plunge into many support efforts and is adding more value to our group everyday!  Please stop by the Technology Helpdesk and say hi to Dennis.

Microsoft Office 2007 Upgrade now available!

Microsoft Office 2007 Upgrade is now available to all faculty, staff and students on campus.  This online upgrade is easy to complete and should not take more than 5-10 minutes of your time.  The upgrade can be found at MIDDFILES\Software\Office2007.  Double-click the Office2007_upgrade file that is inside the folder.  This will start an automated upgrade of your current Microsoft Office Suite.  This file will upgrade Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook to the 2007 version.

It is recommended that you first prepare for the new Microsoft Office 2007 user interface by visiting the Technology Helpdesk website as a resource to learn more about this upgraded Office version.  You may also visit our Wiki resource link here: https://mediawiki.middlebury.edu/wiki/LIS/Microsoft_Word_2007_Basic_Usage

NOTE:  If you currently have Microsoft Office Access 2003 you should not run this upgrade.  Please contact the Helpdesk for upgrade assistance.

Library Exam Hours

24 hoursThe Main Library will be providing extended hours during the last week of classes and the exam period. 24/7 hours start on Sunday 5/2 and end at 8 pm on Tuesday 5/18. Educause Live webcast on Google Apps

Join us in LIB 145 on Thursday, April 22, at 1:00 pm, as we listen in on Macalester College’s experience with Google Apps, an Educause Live webcast.

“The Google Apps hosted e-mail solution continues to draw a great deal of interest from higher-education institutions. A recent informally planned conference call with a few interested institutions snowballed into a web conference with over a hundred institutions attending. Ted Fines and David Sisk will focus on Macalester’s experience with Google over the past two years of integrating, maintaining, and supporting Google Apps for their user community, with some analysis of why there is such high interest in Google’s hosted solution.”

Access to e-content: permanent or not?

We have online access to a large number of journals and newspapers.  The terms governing our access vary considerably, and can change with the passage of time.  One of the most important aspects of our access is the extent to which it is dependable and permanent.  Following is an attempt to illustrate the range of stability of our electronic offerings.

The most stable and permanent situation is when we have a subscription with the publisher to a specific journal or packaged group of journals (e.g. Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Taylor & Francis).  In this case we have guaranteed permanent access to all material published during the years of our subscription.  Often we will also have access to a backfile of material published before our subscription started.  In some cases we are assured continuing access to this backfile, while in other cases ongoing access to any material dating from before the start of our subscription is not guaranteed.
