Horror movies have always entertained and fascinated me. The fantasy worlds created in each horror movie, weather it be zombie, vampire, serial killer, alien, or what have you, the narrative conventions vary immensely. I would like to focus on one type of horror film, perhaps a series by one director, and explore its partucular influences and innovations. Also, I’m interested to see how context shapes the narrative conventions of horror moves.

some thoughts I have more specifically are:

– horror films in new york

– horror films made during world war II

-The origins of the Zombie movie

-Horror movies:The silent years

Some series I’m intersted in exploring are:

-Troma films

-Evil Dead series

-Various takes on Frankenstein

-Comparing the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre with the re-make (also exploring other original/re-make pairings)

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

  1. JJ – looking at a genre (or a specific subgenre or slice of the genre) is a good strategy. I’m not sure what your key research questions are, and how it relates to the course’s approach to narrative. I think ideally you should explore how a particular mode of horror employs narrative strategies, or how a certain trend emerged in terms of narration (like the “final girl” narratives). Let’s chat about this idea more…
