Need a Place to Live in J-Term

Once you have secured your Winter term internship, there is still one more step towards completion: Housing. You start to ask yourself, “Where can I look for housing? How convenient is the transportation from the housing to all destinations? How comfortable am I sharing a living space with a someone else? Will the housing arrangement be affordable? Where can I start looking?” Please don’t panic! I am here to make your life easier by offering you a couple of suggestions.

Let’s start by opening your web browser to the Career Services homepage. As a reminder, the Career Services website should always be your starting point, whether you are searching for internships, uploading/downloading documents or scheduling an appointment with a counselor. On the left column, Click on the Student tab, then on the Resource and Toolkit tab and lastly, scroll down to Housing Resources and click on it. Voila! Start your research by clicking on the several division tabs (cities, general relocation information, YMCA) accordingly.

Keep in mind the factors that make your final decision: location, budget and accommodation. Two summers ago, I had a friend who applied to an awesome law firm internship in New York City. He completed the process by securing an apartment for the summer. When the time came, we checked out the living space and we shook our heads as soon as we entered the neighborhood. New York City is a safe place in general, but there are some places one should avoid as a visitor. First, we walked about ten street blocks from the train station to the assigned apartment building. Second, the main door to  his apartment was jammed, and later, we had a problem trying to close the door. Obviously, he felt uncomfortable with his living arrangements and luckily, he had my place to stay over. He spent another week looking for a new living space.

Always have a backup plan. If you have the time to visit the city you will be interning in the future, I encourage you to check out the neighborhoods and make sure it is a place you feel comfortable to live. If not, you can always check reviews on the website, which is also provided in the Housing Resources Section. Good luck!

P.S. Any questions and comments about housing, come in the drop-ins in the Career Services Office. The link should  take you directly to the Housing Resources page.

How to Explain Your Language Proficiency to Employers

Have you ever wondered how proficient you are in a foreign language?

Intergency Language Roundtable is an unfunded federal organization where government employees interested in foreign languages can come together, inside and outside of government, to discuss/share information that concerns themselves and others.

Did you know that for the first 175 years of the United States foreign language competence of the U.S. government employees was not examined. In the 1950s, after wars with Japan and Korea, the United States followed that foreign language competence among government employees was a must, a necessary means to commuicate translated information efficiently. As a result, the Civil Service Commision was directed to register employees with a strong foreign language background, skills and experiences. The problem was they did not have a system to follow, until they came up with a system that was objective and even applicable to all languages and Civil Services positions, and that was the development of standarized ratings/scales. This determines your proficiency level in a foregin language, in all departments, whether it’s speaking, writing, listening or reading.

Check the Web site to figure out how proficient you are in a foreign language and what you can do to better your resume, your proficiency and access to internships involving multilingual tasks/priorities.

Universal Music Group Externship

What’s an externship? How will an externship benefit me? Well, these are questions a Middlebury student would normally ask when receiving an e-mail about externship opportunities from the Career Services Office. Of course, you may gloss it over  and move on to the next e-mail, but here are a few pointers explaining why an externship opportunity is as important as an internship. Let’s break it down:

A Middlebury externship takes place in the Fall break (October 18-19) and it’s a learning opportunity to give you a short taste of professional experience in the field you are interested in. Simply, shadowing for a couple of days. You will not be treated as such in the background, but will be fully immersed in the experience, ranging from sitting in meetings to working with different departments.
