Tonights meeting kicked off GlobalHealthU for this year, introducing us to the theme of health and human rights. Specifically this meeting looked into the question of ‘where do human rights come from?’ We watched a great video giving us background on the idea of human rights (Click here to watch). In our small groups we addressed the following questions:
– what does it mean to be human? what rights are inherent to human beings?
– are human rights objective or subjective?
– how do various perceptions of human rights change how they are upheld?
During the next week, think about how human rights relate to our everyday lives and the context in which they exist in countries around the world.
Cat and Gina gave a great presentation on the GROW trip from this past summer. They showed us the three main parts of GHI, namely the health component, the agricultural component, and the office component, and described the way in which GHI employees and volunteers enter into the Rwandan community to disseminate knowledge and skills to families in the area. Cat, Gina and Ellery lived within the community and among the people they worked with, making their experience that much more personal and meaningful. Pictures soon to come!
