Leave a comment with your new Russian name below, along with a reason why you chose it.
I would like to be called “Михаил” because the name is very similar to my actual name.
I’d like to be called Артём because then my nickname in both English and Russian could be Art, or Арт. And I like the name.
I’d like to be called Марина because it is the most similar to my English name.
I’d like to be called “Алексей” because it is very close to my English name, and I like Alexei Karamazov’s character in the Brothers Karamazov.
I’d like to be called Алекса́ндр for the obvious reason but also because watching Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky was an early cause for my interest in Russia.
I would like the name Клара because I think it is beautiful and I love the meaning of the word itself
I have chosen the name Лука because I just finished reading Tolstoy’s The Cossacks and one of the main characters has that name.
I called my best friend (a University of Oregon student who studies Russian and lived in St. Petersburg last year, his name is Ben) for help with this one. I knew he’d get a kick out of choosing my name, and have a story to go with his choice. His first thought was Dima, the name of one of his main homies in St. Petersburg. But he quickly changed to Коля (Kolya), the name of what he described as a depressive, dark, guy he met on a train who was totally lost and having profound struggles with alcohol, but was real with Ben, and kind and compassionate to Ben’s good friend, Anna (also a dangerously heavy drinker), and spent all of a couple nights smoking and drinking in the little space between cars with her. He thought it fitting, and a chill sounding name. I like it. It’s the diminutive of Никола́й (Nikolai). On Ben’s recommendation, I’ll go by Коля.
I will choose the name Искра because it means spark. I also love the pronunciation of this name.
I would like to be called Виктория because I like the way it sounds and I almost think it sounds royal.
I would like to be called Кристина because my English name can be used as a Russian name as well.
