June Notes for Fulbright and Watson Applicants

Summer is here! And while you are (hopefully) enjoying some good weather and fun, if you’re thinking about applying for a Fulbright or Watson nomination in the fall, it’s a good idea to begin working on those applications. Below are a few notes for you:

Make sure you know the internal deadlines and application processes! See https://go.middlebury.edu/fulbright and https://go.middlebury.edu/watson for details. Note: the fellowships office must register Watson applicants in the online Watson system. As of today, everyone who has notified us of their interest has been registered! If you can’t find a link, check your junk/clutter/spam filters. For technical or password problems with the Watson online system, you must contact the Watson office for help.

If you haven’t sent in a preliminary application for Watson or Fulbright, but want to do so now, that is just fine! Alumni, you can apply for Fulbright through Middlebury; you just have to follow our process and campus deadlines.

And a few more Fulbright tips: review the specific country/grant type pages carefully to make sure you are a good fit. Criteria do change sometimes from year to year. Also, Fulbright Nat Geo is back this year! Look out for the webinar on  Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling program on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at 2:00pm ET. 

Record Number of Fulbright Recipients from Middlebury

Congratulations to the seniors and alumni who received a Fulbright grant! A total of 15 seniors and young alumni who applied through Middlebury received a Fulbright Research/Study or English Teaching Assistantship grant. This is a new record for Midd! Next year, Middlebury alumni will be scattered across the globe, from India to Senegal, Georgia to North Macedonia, Spain to Peru. Watson Webinar on Tuesday, May 7 at 3pm EST

Potential Watson candidates may want to attend the Spring informational webinar on Tuesday, May 7 at 3pm EST. The webinar is open to all! You can sign up through this link . Please note that the webinar will be recorded and available to play for anyone who is not able to attend the webinar.

Middlebury a Top Producer of Fulbrights

Once again, Middlebury is a top producer of student Fulbright grant recipients! And for those interested in the 2019-20 competition, now is the time to start thinking about application ideas! See more information about info sessions and internal deadlines at go/fellowships. Alumni and current seniors are able to apply!

Teach in China Program Deadline Feb 28!

IIE is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the CEAIE Teach in China Program.  Teach in China is looking for recent graduates or alumni with an interest in teaching, education and/or China for 12-month teaching placements in China.  More than 100 placements are anticipated to be offered.  Successful grantees will be placed at a Chinese school, from elementary to the university level, in locations across China.  Benefits for those selected for the program include:

Flights: Roundtrip international airfare

Local transportation: Airport pick-up in Beijing; the first train ticket from Beijing to program school

Monthly salary: comparable to Chinese teachers’ salaries

Visa: work visa, the visa fee incurred overseas will be reimbursed up to 2,000RMB; the visa fees incurred in China will be covered by the program school

Insurance: Comprehensive Medical Insurance for Foreigner and Countryman from Hong Kong and Macao no less than 2,000 RMB

Housing: Free accommodation, including private bedroom, living room (shared), kitchen (independent or shared; if no kitchen, then access to canteen), furniture, television, water heater, refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioning and internet connection.

TESOL Certification:  Those without TEFL/TESOL certification will be required to go through a training leading to being certified TESOL/TEFL instructors.

The program is open to citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Australia between the ages of 20 and 55.  Chinese work permit policy requires that these teachers be native speakers of English.  Applicants should have obtained a Bachelor’s degree by the time their program begins; applicants who have TESOL certification or 2 or more years of teaching experience are highly desired.

The opportunity will begin in August 2019 with a planned summer training camp.  The deadline to apply is February 28, 2019.
