Midd Students Earn NSF GRFP Awards and Honors

Three recent graduates have been offered National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships (NSF GRFP) in support of their graduate studies research. Four additional Middlebury alumni and a current student received honorable mention.

The highly selective NSF GRFP program supports outstanding students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at U.S. institutions. 

This year’s Middlebury recipients include: 

  • Camryn Kluetmeier ’21.5, Environmental Studies and Geology, Duke University
  • Oliver Patrick ’24, Environmental Studies and Biology, TBA
  • Abigail Santis ’23, Environmental Studies and Geology, Washington University 

The following students were named honorable mention:

  • Matthew Brockley ’23, Biochemistry and Math
  • Sophia Johnson ’22, Geology
  • Amanda Manoogian ’24, Earth and Climate Science
  • Ella Thompson ’25, Biology and Environmental Studies
  • Max Zeltsar ’24.5, Conservation Biology

Congrats to St. Andrew’s Scholarship Winner – Josiah Durfee, ‘25

Josiah Durfee, a political science major and Geography minor, will head to the University of St. Andrew’s in Scotland this Fall to pursue his Master of Letters (MLitt) degree in Strategic Studies, with his St. Andrews Scholarship. This opportunity will allow him to deepen his study of conflict and strategy and continue research on the conflict in Ukraine. Congratulations Josiah! 2026 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship Application Now Open 

This fellowship is for immigrants or children of immigrants planning to attend graduate school full time in the US, or those students early in their graduate studies in the US. Detailed information about eligibility, selection, and the application process is now available on the Soros web site. Sign up for an upcoming information session to learn more, and try out the eligibility quiz to get a sense for your candidacy (here). The application deadline is October 30, 2025, at 2 PM ET.

Schwarzman Scholars Application Now Open

Applications are now open for this one-year, fully-funded master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, which is designed to build a global community of future leaders who will serve to deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world.

Eligibility:

  • candidates aged 18 to 28, regardless of nationality
  • proficiency in English 
  • an undergraduate degree or its equivalent
  • Mandarin skills not required 

For candidates who hold passports from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao – the deadline is May 20, 2025, 11:59PM ET.  The China application can be found here.  

For US/Global applicants – visit the Schwarzman Scholars website for application materials.  The U.S./Global application will close September 10, 2025, 3:00 PM ET

Learn about the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship – Register for May 1 Webinar

The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship application opens May 1, and all interested candidates are encouraged to participate in the kickoff webinar the same day, 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm ET. The webinar, led by executive director and fellow, will feature a recently returned Watson fellow as guest speaker discussing their project and experience.
