University of Tennessee Summer Undergraduate Research Education Experiences in the Environmental Health Sciences, Applications Open!

The University of Tennessee Summer Undergraduate Research Education Experiences in the Environmental Health Sciences provides students an opportunity to explore their interests in the environmental health-related aspects of biology, microbiology, and the biomedical sciences through hands-on summer research opportunities. Students will uniquely experience the breadth and depth of research that occurs at a major research institution.

Program Description
The University of Tennessee’s Center for Environmental Biotechnology, Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, and Office of Undergraduate Research have partnered to provide a ten-week summer research education experience program designed to immerse and challenge undergraduate students in the science, technology, engineering, mathematical, and medical science (STEMM) disciplines. Students will be placed into faculty mentor labs for rigorous hands-on independent research with complementary training in experimental design, ethics, statistical analysis, laboratory management, entrepreneurship, and science communication. Application deadline is March 10, 2020.

• Dates: May 26th to August 1st, 2020
• Stipend: $3,700 plus housing and travel to and from Knoxville, Tennessee

Program Eligibility
Undergraduate students majoring in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, or other biotechnology-related areas, other physical sciences, science education, or public policy who have a strong desire to complete a Ph.D. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in accredited colleges or universities.

Apply for Johns Hopkins University’s first annual Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium

Applications are now open for Johns Hopkins University’s first annual Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium! This is a new annual two-day event at our main campus in Baltimore, Maryland and it will offer students across the country the chance to disseminate their humanities research on a national scale. Our event will be this spring, April 3rd and 4th, 2020 and our application portal is now open. 

This symposium is open to undergraduate students who would like to present their original scholarship in the humanities. We hope to have 400 participants this year and will also be offering a select number of travel grants to help students afford participation. In addition to the multiple panels of student papers and presentations (including original creative works), we will also have a wonderful keynote delivered by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anthony Doerr and multiple professional development panels featuring graduate students and faculty in our humanities departments and centers. Students studying all areas of the humanities are welcome to attend.

Summer Research Opportunities at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Labs–Upcoming Webinars and Application Info

Students interested in the NIST Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) in Gaithersburg, MD and Denver, CO Labs should sign up for one of these webinars:

December 19, 2018 at 1:30 PM-2:30 PM (ET)

January 10, 2019 at 12:00 PM-1:00 PM (ET)

Program description: Over the course of 11 weeks, SURF students contribute to the ongoing research of one of the six NIST facilities which are the Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL), Engineering Laboratory (EL), Information Technology Laboratory (ITL), Material Measurement Laboratory (MML), NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), and Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML) (which now includes project in the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology). The SURF Program is administered at the Boulder, CO and Gaithersburg, MD locations. SURF students receive stipend, and housing and travel allotments (as needed). The NIST (SURF) program is for students majoring in science, mathematics and engineering.

Eligibility: The program is open to United States citizens or permanent residents. Students must be undergraduates at a U.S. university or college with a scientific major, have a G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0, and are considering pursuing a graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.). Students with physics, material science, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or engineering majors are always encouraged to apply. There may be research opportunities for students with other majors.

2019 Application Process–NEW: The application process has changed for summer 2019. Students can now apply to the 2019 program  without the assistance of their universities. Check back later for the link to  the posting on USAJOBS (tentatively scheduled to open on December 15, 2018 ).

Call for Applicants: NSF/REU Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Water Science and Engineering 

Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia

Application Deadline: February 15, 2019 (11:59 PM, EST)

Rising sophomore, junior and senior undergraduate students from all U.S. colleges/universities are invited to apply for a 10-week NSF/REU summer research program in interdisciplinary water science and engineering at Virginia Tech. Fellowships begin May 28, 2019 (arrival day) and end August 2, 2019 (departure day). A stipend of $500/week ($5000 total), housing, meals, and travel expenses are provided. Ten students will be recruited for this program; two applicants will be selected for travel to India for research at The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM).

Summer Research Opportunities in Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences with C3 Undergraduate Fellowship Program

C3 Undergraduate Fellowships provide rising juniors and seniors with paid and mentored graduate-level research experience, plus training about applying to and succeeding in graduate school. Undergraduate fellows experience a new academic and social environment in dynamic and diverse regions of the country by spending eight to nine weeks working with faculty mentors, graduate student mentors, and fellow undergraduate summer researchers at Columbia University; University of California, Berkeley; the University of Chicago; and the University of Michigan.

For information about eligible fields of study, how to apply, and program information, see go/c3 and look for the C3 Undergraduate Fellowship under C3 Programs. Application deadlines range from Jan 15 to February 1.

Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, rising juniors or seniors as of the summer 2019. Strong applicants have a clear interest in conducting research in the arts, humanities, or humanistic social sciences and are potentially interested in graduate study in the future. Applicants from groups historically underrepresented in the academy are encouraged to apply; this includes those who are historically underrepresented (such as African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders), first generation college students, or have followed nontraditional pathways to college due to exceptional talent and motivation in the face of adversity, such as societal, economic, or academic disadvantages.
