ANNOUNCING: VT EPSCoR Undergraduate Research Internship Positions available Summer 2024 (the Science of Stories)

Vermont EPSCoR’s Science of Online Corpora, Knowledge, and Stories (SOCKS) research team is currently recruiting 12 undergraduate students for an exciting ten-week, paid internship opportunity based at the University of Vermont (UVM) beginning June 10, 2024.

SOCKS is a large, multi-disciplinary effort funded by the National Science Foundation, that revolves around stories as an essential part of how people comprehend, explain, predict, and seek to navigate the world. SOCKS supports the Digital Humanities by developing a powerful approach to quantifying both individual stories and ecologies of stories through massive data collection, natural language processing, and large language models—computer-based encodings of the meaningful connections between words and phrases.

The following research areas are available:

  • Indigenous voices in global environmental governance
  • Data ethics, privacy, and narrative bias 
  • Social and health narratives
  • Analysis of local news stories and programs

Other faculty mentors may be available from the SOCKS faculty on the social and health teams. If you are interested in working with anyone in particular, be sure to list that in your statement of research interest. The range of research areas in which students may participate is quite extensive. SOCKS interns delve into research projects— an opportunity not often available during the academic year. Projects are markedly different from most course-based work in that they are open-ended and part of a much larger research program.

Summer Research Internship at Van Andel Institute, Applications Due Feb. 1, 2024

Van Andel Institute is now accepting applications for the 2024 Summer Internship Program for undergraduate students. Applicants are required to submit a complete online application as well as combine their cover letter, resume and official transcript as a single electronic pdf file to upload with the online application. To be eligible, applicants must also have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be currently enrolled in an undergraduate science-related degree program. Applicants that are either currently enrolled in high school (or dually enrolled in high school and college), have graduated with Bachelor’s degree before the internship start date or are currently enrolled in Master’s, DO, PhD or MD program are ineligible. We also require two letters of recommendations be submitted by your recommenders to undergrad@vai.edu. Applicants are NOT to submit their own letters of recommendation.

Summer 2024 Amgen Scholars Program Application Open; Deadline 2/1/24

The Amgen Scholars program provides an 8-10 week summer research program in biotechnology fields (broadly defined). Applicants should be sophomores or juniors, planning on pursuing a PhD or MD-PhD and pursue biotechnology research.

The application deadline is February 1, 2024.  Applicants should review program site eligibility carefully; regional programs—US, Canada, Asia, Europe, and Australia—have specific citizenship requirements.    More information, including eligibility requirements and application instructions, is available at the Amgen Scholars website, http://amgenscholars.com.

Blakemore Fellowship for Asian Language Study, Deadline Dec. 30, 2023

The Blakemore Foundation is now accepting applications for its  Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study and the new Blakemore Kingfisher Art History Language Fellowships. Both programs provide full tuition and a stipend for living, travel and study expenses at approved language programs in Asia for an academic year of full-time intensive language study during the 2024/2025 academic year.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study are awarded to graduating seniors, college graduates, graduate students and young/mid-career professionals for advanced study of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, or Vietnamese in Asia.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States, have completed (at minimum) the third year of study of the Asian language, and are ready to advance to professional fluency.

Blakemore Kingfisher Art History Language Fellowships will be awarded for study of Chinese or Korean in East Asia. These grants are open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada who have a well-demonstrated intent to study the pre-twentieth century history of Chinese or Korean art at the doctoral level. Applicants must have received a bachelor’s degree by the start of a grant and have completed (at minimum) two years of classroom study of the language in rigorous college-level language programs.

Who should apply? The Blakemore Foundation is looking for exceptional candidates who will make significant contributions to their career field. The ideal candidate is someone with stellar grades, outstanding recommendations, and a demonstrated commitment to the Asian country and language. Beyond commitment, we are looking for a mature purpose: a career path that will require and benefit from fluency in that Asian language throughout that individual’s life.

DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship, Apply by 1/17/24

he 2024-2025 application for the Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) is now available online. Application final submission is due January 17, 2024.

The DOE CSGF provides financial support for students pursuing doctoral degrees in fields that use high-performance computing to solve complex problems in science and engineering (science and engineering track). The program also funds doctoral candidates in applied mathematics, statistics or computer science who are pursuing research that will contribute to more effective use of emerging high-performance systems (mathematics and computer science track).

Benefits:

  • Full payment of tuition, mandatory fees, and student-only health insurance
  • $45,000 annual stipend
  • $1,000 per year academic allowance
  • 12-week practicum at a DOE national laboratory
  • Annual fellows conference in Washington, D.C.
  • Renewable up to four years


Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents
  • Senior undergraduates, first-year graduate students, or those matriculating into graduate school for fall 2024
  • Students must be planning full-time, uninterrupted study pursuing a Ph.D. at a U.S. accredited university
