We will spend a fun and entertaining 12 hours dancing the night away in McCullough Social Space on Saturday, January 19th from 4pm – 4am to support local families and the medical needs of their kids. Registration for the event is now open at go/dancemarathon! It’s will be  great night filled with good music (live band, DJs), activities, food (Ben and Jerry’s and free Grille!), all in support of a great cause. The kids from the hospital and their families join us for the night and really enjoy dancing with the college students and sharing their stories. It would be amazing to see you as many Middlebury students, faculty and staff there as possible. CREATE a TEAM with friends and come join the party.  It costs $10 to register and all proceeds go towards our fundraising goal of $10,000.

BIG BOOK DRIVE FOR SA GROUPS

HELP STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS KEEP THRIVING – JOIN THE BOOK DRIVE for funding student organizations!

Would your room benefit from a little cleaning out? This week the College Bookstore, in cooperation with Middlebury Waste Management  and the Student Activities Office, is kicking off the big 2012/2013 book drive.

Working with the One Planet Books program sponsored by Missouri Book Services we are able to receive funds for Middlebury student organizations from every box of donated books we send to One Planet Books .

Usually we are able to distribute $1000 every year but with your help we can make 2012/2013 the best year yet for funding student organizations.

Please bring your surplus books into the store all this week Mon – Fri from 8:30-5, Sat, Dec 15 from 9-5 and Sun, Dec 16 from 11-5 and place them in the green One Planet donation bins. Most books are acceptable –not just textbooks. We can take novels and poetry; paperbacks and hardcovers (or with no covers); new or old.  Sorry no phone books nor periodicals. For restrictions please see: http://oneplanetbooks.com/faq.php#restrictions.

We are still buying back textbooks during the same time period. Just bring in all your books and see what we can give you cash for. Any “no value” books will be gladly accepted for the book drive. Thank you for pitching in!

Julia Alvarez Reading and Talk

Please come and join us for
Butterflies, a Wedding, a Border of Lights:
A Reading and Talk by Middlebury College’s Writer-in-Residence Julia Alvarez.
Wednesday, November 28, 7 p.m., Robert A. Jones ’59 Conference Room
Middlebury College’s writer-in-residence Julia Alvarez will read from her most recent book “A Wedding in Haiti” about her friendship with a young Haitian boy known as Piti. A teenager when Julia and her husband, Bill, first met him in 2001, Piti crossed the border into the Dominican Republic to find work. Julia, impressed by his courage, charmed by his smile, has over the years come to think of him as a son, even promising to be at his wedding someday. When Piti called in 2009, Julia’s promise was tested. To Alvarez, much admired for her ability to lead readers deep inside her native Dominican culture, “Haiti is like a sister I’ve never gotten to know.” And so we follow her across the border into what was once the richest of all the French colonies and now teeters on the edge of the abyss—first for the celebration of a wedding and a year later to find Piti’s loved ones in the devastation of the earthquake.
Julia Alvarez will also talk about the “Border of Lights,” a initiative that took place from October 4-6, 2012 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Haitian Massacre, during which dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the slaughter of as many as 20,000 Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian decent at the Dominican-Haitian border. Last October, artists, activists, students, parents, teachers, and clergy gathered together in the border city of Dajabón to remember a genocide long forgotten, and unknown to many people. Moreover, the “Border of Lights” initiative seeks not only to remember the victims of the massacre but also shine a light on ongoing injustices faced by those of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic.
This event is part of the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Violence sponsored by the Program in Women and Gender Studies, Chellis House (Women’s Resource Center), Women of Color, and Stop Trafficking.

You can DISH it out, but you CAN’T take it

Dear Students,

As we approach Thanksgiving Break, we all have much to be thankful for here at Middlebury. That includes the high quality of food provided in Proctor, Ross, and Atwater each day.

As you may have noticed in recent weeks, the dining halls have run low on plates, bowls, and especially cups. I am asking all of us to take the initiative now, before we leave for break and then hit finals, to return dishes from your rooms, study spaces, suites, and houses. Let’s make it a campus goal to return as many dishes as we can to the dining halls this weekend.

Bringing back our dishes will make the dining experience more pleasant for all of us.

Wishing each of you a very happy Turkey Day.

Best,
Charlie Arnowitz
