Bioneers Youth Program – Internship

Internship Description
Bioneers Youth Program is seeking an intern from a high-school, college, or graduate program to assist the Youth & Conference Project Manager in creating and developing the Youth Program at the Annual Bioneers Conference as well as coordinating youth participation in the scholarship program.  At the end of the internship period, the intern will have had significant experience in event coordination and relationship building across diverse organizations. Organizational Description

The Intern will be responsible for:
Outreach & Relationship Building
•    Develop and strengthen relationships with Bioneers youth and youth-serving organizations
•    Collaborate with youth organizations to coordinate outreach and youth program at conference
•    Support partnership development and help create collaborative Bay Area network of organizations serving youth
•    Assist in the promotion of youth programs at Beaming Bioneers partner conferences.

Scholarship Award Coordination
•    Conduct scholarship and participant outreach to youth/activist organizations, schools/universities, environmental orgs, etc. principally targeting indigenous, low-income and at-risk youth, and youth of color
•    Communicate with youth scholarship applicants/recipients
•    Process youth scholarship registrations, in coordination with NM office staff
•    Assist youth in travel and lodging logistics for conference

Conference Production
•    Coordinate all aspects of the youth experience at the conference.
•    Youth Unity tent activities/additional workshops
•    Work with the Youth Program On-Site Staff & Work Exchange on site
•    Coordinate youth blogging on site
•    Arrange for on-site youth equipment & tech needs
•    Coordinate and find host for the youth open mic.
•    Continue to develop ideas for ongoing networking of the Bioneers Youth, as well as opportunities to enhance the project.
•    Collaborate with other staff to cross-pollinate programs, through initiatives such as the Moving Image Film Festival and Just Us for Food Justice.
•    Update Evaluation Form for youth attendees to complete post conference.
•    Plan Youth Summit/Orientation for Thursday before the conference.
•    Participate in conference production team meetings.

Other Opportunities
•    Potential to explore development of Mentorship Program.
•    Assist with coordination of Bioneers Youth Advisory Council.
•    Work with Internet Content Manager to update Facebook pages and Tweet from Twitter.
•    Contribute to fundraising efforts for youth program, through grant writing, reporting and networking with funders.
•    Read and stay up-to-date on youth oriented movements in environmental and social justice and other organizations’ projects, including blogs and newsletters, and suggesting methods for collaboration when possible.
•    Watch and or listen to Bioneers past plenary talks and workshops.

The chosen candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:
•    Creative, self- motivated and entrepreneurial.
•    Must have strong writing skills and communication skills. Intern will be doing a lot of communicating via email and phone.
•    Some experience in a position of leadership is ideal, whether through campus activism, online or in social groups. Intern must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a variety of projects and priorities in an effective manner.
•    Experience using Excel, Microsoft Word, and online social networking tools like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter.
•    The ideal applicant will also have experience in event planning and coordination.
•    Familiarity with Bioneers and/or previous attendance at a Bioneers Conference preferred.
•   Aged 17-25 years old.

Compensation:
The ideal candidate will be dually enrolled in an academic institution that will grant the intern academic credit for this internship. In addition, there is a $2000 stipend awarded to the intern and an additional $500 awarded at the completion of the conference weekend to go toward travel (if non-local) or as a bonus if candidate is local.

Location & Office Setting:

This internship will be two days a week and is located in San Francisco Bay Area. It will require a flexible work place and schedule. Intern must be comfortable working from a home office or at local cafes with Youth and Conference Project Manager. Intern must have access to their own computer and internet. Intern will be required to attend the Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, October 15-18, 2009. Out of State/Remote Applicants considered however Bioneers cannot pay travel costs to attend the Bioneers Conference in October, but candidate may use $500 travel stipend or bonus to cover costs if needed.
