CleanTech U Associates Overview

Building the new clean energy and green economy is not only one of the largest economic opportunities of our century, but a human necessity. In a few short months, CleanTech U (www.cleantechu.org) has launched at several leading U.S. universities, been recognized at the Clinton Global Initiative and begun formulating a China engagement strategy to create an international network and organization.

CleanTech U is looking for dynamic, innovative upstarts to help create launchpads for student entrepreneurs and leaders. We’re not looking for the pencil pushing, pinstripe dressed, clock in-clock out type; we’re looking for the troublemakers, envelope pushers, dreamers. If you have a penchant for carving out new solutions, innovating out of a corner, seeing the opportunity in the midst of chaos: We’d love to hear from you!

Ray Rothrock P’12, is the managing general partner of the venture capital firm Venrock, which he joined in 1988.  Rothrock’s career began at Yankee Atomic Electric as a nuclear safety analysis engineer, and moved to a newly started and fast growing Sun Microsystems in marketing and sales.  An engineer at heart with a keen insight into markets and technology, he lead Venrock into the Internet age.  His current investments focus in the fields of computer network security and energy.  In addition to his venture capital activities including a director of the National Venture Capital Association, he has served on the Board of Trustees of the Texas A&M Foundation, and serves on the Visiting Committee of the MIT Nuclear Science and Engineering Department.

Earth Institute, Columbia University invites Midd Kids to attend the annual Environmental and Sustainable Development Programs Open House on Monday, October 25, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Rotunda of Low Library on Columbia University’s Morningside campus (116th and Broadway).

If you are interested in environmental policy, climate change or sustainability management, Columbia has many programs for you, from undergraduate to graduate programs and from certificate programs to study abroad. Come learn about Columbia University’s new M.S. in Sustainability Management, a highly specialized professional program which can be taken part or full time, that will formally train and educate sustainability practitioners for a broad range of fields.

You can learn about the other nearly 30 degree and non-degree offerings Columbia has related to the environment and sustainable development. This event will provide you with the opportunity to meet with representatives from each of these programs. We encourage you to spread the word about this Open House to friends and colleagues who might be interested in our academic programs.

The program is currently recruiting volunteers to teach English to students aged 6-18 for the Maldivian Academic year from January to November 2011, and because you are so special, they want MiddKids!

The best part about this volunteer program is that the recruited volunteers are PAID! Yes, you will have to fly yourself out to the beautiful Maldives, but get this. Volunteers receive a $400 monthly allowance as well as a $1,100 stipend upon completion of the full program.

IHME Fellowship: Applications Due Nov. 1

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington is now accepting applications for the Post-Bachelor Fellowship Program for the Fall 2010 cohort. All applications are due November 1.

Program Description

The purpose of the fellowship is to:

  • Enhance skills in conducting in-depth, methodological research on a variety of global health topics with mentoring from faculty and researchers who are the leading minds in their fields
  • Advance knowledge of quantitative analytical methodologies and their application to global health
  • Develop understanding of the current global health landscape and its challenges
  • Strengthen ability to design and implement research projects and mentor junior researchers
  • Prepare for future positions in academia, national health agencies, international organizations, and foundations

Fellows receive training through on-the-job research, methods workshops, access to University of Washington courses, and on-site lectures and seminars. Post-Graduate Fellows contribute directly to IHME’s research agenda through their involvement in work groups, development of new methods, and managing and driving research projects.

Post-Graduate Fellowships are appointed at IHME for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year upon mutual agreement. The salary is $50,000. As University of Washington employees, fellows are eligible for an insurance benefits package that includes a choice among several medical and dental insurance plans, life insurance, and long-term disability. Please note that there is no retirement package included with this appointment.

What’s so great about a liberal arts education? Every Midd Kid asks this question especially during their senior year when they see job posts that specifically seek out undergraduate students with a communications or business major. Well Midd Kid, let me answer your question.

WRITING SKILLS. Think about the 2 CW courses that we are required to take in order to graduate. Remember your FYS and how you had to write and rewrite essays during your first months at Midd? What about all those papers you have to write for class? Correct me if I’m wrong but, thinking back on my 24 classes (Chinese included), each class required some sort of writing, and each professor had their own specific writing preferences that Midd Kids had to cater to. Middlebury basically gives you 4 years to seriously hone those writing skills that businesses want!

Massachi wrote: Employers know that writing well will help you succeed in fundraising, marketing/outreach, advocacy, project management, administration, etc. No matter if you’re at the entry level or in senior management, strong writing skills are critical if you want to capture the interest and attention of your constituents and prospective donors. Virtually everyone working in the nonprofit sector has to do some writing at some point. And the better you can do that, the deeper and broader your impact will be. Your organization may produce great work or come up with outstanding ideas, but if you present those achievements or thoughts poorly they will not get very far.
