Each year during the month of September, food banks across the country challenge their communities to take action against food insecurity.
Approximately one in seven households in the United States are food insecure due to the combination of structural inequalities that segregate our communities by income, race, social and education access. Because of these inequalities, access to healthy, affordable food is often not a constant reality. How can our communities work to eliminate these barriers? In what ways can we become better advocates for our communities? Through service and awareness of our community’s food access needs, we put a face to an issue that affects 18 million households nationwide. Together, we can build supportive structures that build accessibility for all rather than restrict growth, perpetuate stereotypes and diminish human dignity.
