Shadowing is the act of following a professional as they do their typical work activities in a clinic or hospital setting. You might ask why this experience is so important? First, it may be the defining experience which tells you whether or not you want to be a physician. Shadowing gives you a very tangible sense of what life is like for a professional. Through working alongside a professional, you can gain unique insight into what happens in a day in the life of your career of choice. You get a sense of what it’s like working with patients, working with other health care professionals (nurses, PAs, and therapists), and what the challenges and rewards are of working in the profession. You’ll learn how a health professional organizes their day, allows time for the unexpected, stays current in the profession, integrates personal and professional life, and manage the financial aspects of their practice.
Shadowing can also be crucial for a second reason: Having clinical experience allows admissions committees know that you have some understanding of what you are getting into. It also shows admissions officers your commitment to a health career because you have taken initiative in learning about being a professional prior to applying to school.
ADEA GoDental is pleased to announce a new
resource that benefits prospective dental students like you—the Enrichment
Programs Calendar! The
calendar is exclusively designed around enrichment programs and experiences in
the United States that focus on the dental professions.
by program name, application deadline, state, educational level and focus area
to find opportunities to bolster your preparation for dental school. Programs
listed on the calendar offer enrichment experiences for all levels of
education—high school, college, post baccalaureate and graduate students. We
encourage you to check the calendar
often as new programs and events are added throughout the year.
The ADEA AADSAS® Participating Dental Schools Required and Recommended Courses chart is a helpful resource for prospective dental school applicants to easily access required and recommended coursework. Traditionally, dental schools expect applicants to complete two semesters (three quarters) of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and physics. It’s important to know how dental schools differ on the additional classes they require, so we encourage students to thoroughly research each school they are interested in applying to for any additional prerequisites.
With more than 50 U.S. dental schools represented, this is a must-attend event for prospective dental school applicants! Take advantage of this opportunity to leave a lasting impression on representatives from dental schools you might apply to as soon as next summer.
Plus, be inspired by future classmates and walk away with the confidence and tools you need to be a standout candidate and successfully submit your application.
A limited amount of travel assistance will be available to individuals traveling from outside the Chicago area.
