Mireille Calle-Gruber

Mireille Calle-Gruber, professor at Paris 3, writer, and Director of the Research Center of Feminine and Gender Studies as well as Francophone Literatures, recently had the honor of becoming a professor emeritus.  To recognize and mark this important occasion as well as show their appreciation, gratitude, and friendship, a group of individuals who had the opportunity to study under and work with Professor Calle-Gruber decided to assemble and publish L’amour du monde à l’abri du monde dans la literature: Mélanges.

One of these individuals is Middlebury faculty member Anaïs Frantz, who teaches a methodology course for our master’s students in Paris who specialize in literature.  Anaïs co-directed this project with three other women who all studied under the direction of Calle-Gruber.  The book is a collection of works inspired by theories proposed by Calle-Gruber in her analyses of authors such as Claude Simon and Assia Djebar, unedited texts from authors such as Michel Butor and Pascal Quignard, as well as stories and experiences from former students, all of which bear witness to the important and brilliant scientific and literary work of Mireille Calle-Gruber.  The book, like its inspiration, is notable in its interdisciplinarity as it explores 20th century French literature, francophone literatures, gender studies, philosophy, and esthetics and its relation to other arts, such as painting, photography, and music.

Congratulations, Anaïs, to you and your team, on the realization of such a unique and meaningful project!
