Two Middlebury people were recognized for their environmental leadership this week: Activist and author Bill McKibben accepted the inaugural Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize for Global Environmental Activism at Dickinson College’s commencement on May 20. The $100,000 prize was established to focus attention on the need to reduce human impact on the planet.

Hilary Platt ’12 was named one of the nation’s top rising young leaders in the clean-energy sector by the national organization Focus the Nation. Twenty students from across the country were selected for their dedication, passion, and unique contribution to increasing clean energy in America. They will meet for one week on Mt. Hood in Oregon, at the ReCharge! Retreat.

With the presidential race heating up, Middlebury’s Professor Pundits, Matt Dickinson and Bert Johnson, posted their latest analysis of recent campaign developments, including Romney’s improving relationship with his base and Obama’s same-sex marriage pronouncement.

With this week marking the end of the academic year, Commencement festivities and observances are underway. For a full schedule of award ceremonies and celebrations, check the Events Calendar.

Among the week’s activities is a chance to engage in discussion with the Middlebury’s honored guests, the very interesting people who will receive honorary degrees at Commencement: educator and philanthropist Sarah Bright Alturki, Harvard musicologist Christoph Wolff, Castleton State College president David Wolk ’75, and chair of the Board of Trustees Frederick Fritz ’68 and his wife Martha Siegfried Fritz. The discussions take place Saturday, May 26, at the Axinn Center beginning at 2:00.

And of course, come rain, sun, or something in between, Commencement begins at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 27, on the College central lawn. The procession starts at 9:50, and all guests and graduates are cautioned to be prepared for any type of weather.

Thursday, May 24, Roman Graf, Gloria Estela Gonzalez Zenteno, Karin Hanta will lead a roundtable discussion about Gender, Sex, and Language Learning. They will look at ways to create more inclusive classroom climates, recognizing the discomfort many queer and trans and gender non-conforming students feel in the classroom when facing norms of pronoun usage and lifestyles in narratives and role-plays, and other issues.

Rock and soul band Prana plays Saturday night at 51 Main. Seven Days declared Prana the Best New Vermont Band of 2010. The show begins at 9:00.
