This week signifies the concluding academic experience for the “Febs” who first arrived on campus four years ago. George W. Bush was still in the White House, Obama and McCain were slugging it out in the primaries, and—unlike this winter—Middlebury was engulfed in snow. This year’s three-day February Celebration, which includes receptions, speeches, and the presentation of replicas of Gamaliel Painter’s cane, will conclude with the much-anticipated “ski down” at the Snow Bowl at noon on Saturday.

They say that all winning streaks must come to an end. Middlebury’s men’s basketball streak of 18 consecutive victories was halted by the Keene (N.H.) State College Owls on Tuesday night by the score of 77-76. The Panthers, who were ranked number one in Division III, remain undefeated (6-0) in NESCAC play. Middlebury will try and shake off the loss this weekend when it faces conference foes Bowdoin at 8 o’clock Friday night and Colby at 4 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be home in Pepin Gymnasium.

Better hurry…tickets are going fast for Thursday night’s performance of “Motown II” at Town Hall Theatre by the talented student-musicians in visiting instructor Myles Donahue’s J-term class. Over winter term the students learned the tools of jazz that were employed by Motown, including the unmistakable “jazz swing feel” of the Detroit sound as opposed to the rigid 8th note of rock or disco. But music theory aside, it’s going to be a memorable show with guest vocalist Chris Waller on the bill.

With students and faculty on winter recess, campus activities will slow down considerably next week. Yet one event did catch our eye. The multi-talented David Bain—faculty member, author, and keyboardist extraordinaire—will perform on Thursday, February 9, at 8 p.m. at 51 Main at the Bridge. Stop by and see why David has performed with blues legends like James Montgomery, Bonnie Raitt, and John Lee Hooker.

Social entrepreneurship moved to center stage last week with the launch of the Middlebury Center for Social Entrepreneurship’s first annual symposium, including the keynote address by Jacqueline Novogratz, a program with pioneering social entrepreneur Bill Drayton, the presentation of student projects, a roundtable discussion, and workshops for educators and students.
