Maps powerfully shape our perceptions, offering an authoritative, visually intuitive representation of the world that can be understood by literate and illiterate individuals alike. While maps provide a sense of scientific accuracy, they inherently reflect a limited perspective, often reinforcing political territories, cultural biases, and societal values, and can distort our understanding of geographical distances and the importance of natural and human-made features.

At the top of the Key Summit on the Routeburn Track in New Zealand’s Fiorland National Park, bush walkers (day hikers) and trampers (backpackers) alike are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of mountains, valleys, and glacial lakes in all directions. This map at their feet helps orient them to their surroundings.
