This site is a companion to the Middlebury Atlas of Globalization.
We are connected to the world in virtually everything we do, but rarely think about it. Yet, these links have significant consequences: the spread of manufacturing from Europe and the US to Asia and South America makes goods cheaper but also makes many people poorer. Increased production and transport facilitate the spread of environmentally friendly technology, like solar panels, but also emit more heat-trapping gasses into our atmosphere, driving changes in the global climate that bring more extreme weather, flooding, and droughts. Social media facilitates the spread of cultural norms like women’s liberation and Black emancipation, but also violent forms of ethnonationalism. Global travel brings us closer together, but also speeds the spread of pandemics. Used together, the Middlebury Atlas and this website will help you make sense of global connections and untangle the omnipresent strands of globalization.
