Freedom Ratings are from the Freedom in the World data collected by FreedomHouse.org. For each country and territory, Freedom in the World analyzes the electoral process, political pluralism and participation, the functioning of the government, freedom of expression and of belief, associational and organizational rights, the rule of law, and personal autonomy and individual rights.
Michel Foucault mapped the shift from public torture to a system of punishment denying freedom, rendering the imprisoned body invisible and facilitating surveillance. The U.S., with less than 5% of the world’s population, incarcerates nearly a quarter of the global prison population, disproportionately affecting communities of color. Despite this, the U.S. is regarded as a “most free” country due to its strong civil liberties and political rights.
