Freedom, Prisons, and Democracy

Michel Foucault mapped the shift from public torture to a system of punishment denying freedom, rendering the imprisoned body invisible and facilitating surveillance. The U.S., with less than 5% of the world’s population, incarcerates nearly a quarter of the global prison population, disproportionately affecting communities of color. Despite this, the U.S. is regarded as a “most free” country due to its strong civil liberties and political rights.
