About Rachel Manning

Interlibrary Loan Coordinator

Winter is Coming…. (ILL services in December)

And with winter comes the massive shipping rush of late December.  Due to the increased risk of losses (and the lack of open libraries willing to send things) the Interlibrary Loan Department limits ordering and shipping during this time.

If you need anything before winter break request it now!  Interlibrary loan requests submitted to ILLiad after Dec. 15th will be ordered in early January.

ILLiad article requests will continue to be filled by RapidILL through Dec. 21st, but must have a valid ISSN and year to be processed a as Rapid request.

For loan materials use NExpress: (http://go/NExpress).  NExpress will stay open during break.  Requests placed in NExpress go straight to the Lending Library for processing.  Loans ordered from NExpress over break should arrive in early January.

ILL Schedule for the Holiday Break

Due to the holidays and shipping madness of late December, ILL limits shipping during this time.  Interlibrary loan requests submitted to ILLiad after Dec. 16th will be ordered in early January.

ILLiad article requests will continue to be filled by RapidILL* through Dec. 21st, but must have a valid ISSN and year to be processed a as Rapid request.

For loan materials use NExpress: http://go/NExpress.  NExpress will stay open throughout the break and requests placed in NExpress go straight to the Lending Library for processing.  Loans ordered from NExpress over break will likely arrive in early January.

New service: Renew your ILLs in ILLiad!

It is now possible to renew an ILL item from the ILLiad web pages:

From within ILLiad, select “Checked Out Items” from the menu on the left. Open the item you would like to renew by clicking on the request number. Click “Renew Request” at the top of the detailed information page to place the renewal request.

There is a limited window of opportunity for placing a renewal.  Renewals can only be placed 10 day before the due date through one day beyond the original due date.

Items already identified as non-renewable will have no button. However, each renewal request is sent to the lender for review, and it is up to the lender to grant or decline our renewal request, so seeing the button in ILLiad is NOT a guarantee of a renewal.

ILL staff will update Millennium and ILLiad with the dates provided by the Lending Libraries, and e-mail patrons when a renewal has been denied.  You can check the status of your renewal in ILLiad or in My MIDCAT

Interlibrary Loan Service Schedule for the Holiday Break 2010:

Due to the holidays and shipping madness of late December, Interlibrary Loan will reduce services during the second half of the month. From Dec. 17th through early Jan. we will not ship any ILL materials. Shipping during the holiday season is notoriously difficult due to the large increases in holiday mail, and it is a common ILL practice to avoid mailing materials during this time. Items arriving late in December, after most people have left campus for the Holiday, are also of little use to patrons and would sit unused for two or more weeks.

ILL requests submitted to ILLiad after Dec. 17th will be ordered in January. ILLiad article requests will continue to be filled by RapidILL* through Dec. 22nd. (*Articles must have a valid ISSN and year to be ordered in Rapid.)

Need materials ASAP use NExpress: http://go/NExpress.  NExpress will stay open throughout the break and requests placed in NExpress go straight to the Lending Library.  Loans ordered from NExpress over break may still not arrive until early Jan.

New Delivery Options for NExpress and ILL: Armstrong Library Pick up.

We have made the Armstrong Science library an official pick up location for ILL and NExpress materials.  If you select Armstrong delivery, your requested materials will be automatically sent to the Armstrong Science Library for pick up when they arrive at Middlebury.

This is now possible for both NExpress and interlibrary loan materials.  However, selecting this option is done very differently in each system.

  • For NExpress the choice is made each time an item is ordered, through a drop-down menu.  Select Armstrong Science library from the list of available pick up locations.  go/NExpress
  • For ILLiad, the choice is made at registration.  In order for a current ILLiad user to change their preferred delivery location in ILLiad, you will need to update your contact Information in the Tools menu in ILLiad.  Click on “Edit My Contact Information” and select Armstrong Science Library as your “Delivery Site” to take advantage of this new service.  You can return to regular pick up at the Davis Family Library at any time by returning to ILLiad and changing your selected delivery site back to Davis Family Library.   go/ill

Please contact mdyill@middlebury.edu with any questions.

NExpress ArticleReach Ending, NExpress loans to continue.

By consensus of the NExpress Consortium, NExpress ArticleReach has been retired.  With all of the participating NExpress schools now using Rapid it was determined that we could provide the same service to our patrons while using one fewer system for processing requests.    All articles currently delivered to a My Midcat account will remain for the normal delivery period.

NExpress service for loan materials will continue, but all article requests should now all be submitted into ILLiad for processing.  To take advantage of RapidILL processing, please include an ISSN in all article requests.

Please contact Rachel Manning:  rmanning@middlebury.edu with any questions about this change.

Library Ending CD Borrowing through ILL

Due to staffing and budget reductions in LIS, we are no longer able to continue traditional ILL services for CD requests.  As of Feb. 1st we will no longer be borrowing or lending CDs through ILL.

The average cost to borrow an item through ILL is about $30.00.  When we include the costs of Mailing and ILL fees, requesting a CD through ILL was at times costing more than purchasing the CDs. Other options for acquiring CDs still include:

Borrow from NExpress: Middlebury will continue to both borrow and lend CDs via NExpress.  There are negligible shipping costs for CD borrowing and lending for NExpress requests because all NExpress items are shipped together.  Middlebury patrons may search the NExpress Catalog at http://go/nexpress.  You can specifically search for CDs and other sound recordings by selecting “Sound Recordings” from the “View Entire Collection” drop down box on the NExpress search page.

Request a purchase: If a CD is not available via NExpress, the CD title can be submitted for purchase to the Music Library, by using the on-line form:   http://www.middlebury.edu/academics/lib/libcollections/libraries/musiclib/suggestapurchase/node/39001

While the Music Library is unable to purchase everything, it is our hope to be able to increase patron driven purchasing as a way to help ease this reduction in ILL services.

Any requests for CDs submitted to ILL after February 1st will be forwarded to Music for purchase consideration and the ILL request will be cancelled.
