1. Y.O.U.’s Inspire Fellows Program at Youth Organization Umbrella in Evanston, IL

This  fellowship is intended for leaders who are interested in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment that offers a hands-on introduction to the fields of positive youth development, education, and non-profit management. Inspire Fellows serve as workshop leaders and counselors for Y.O.U.’s 9-week summer program. Fellows are chosen to develop and facilitate specific workshops in one of three areas: arts and literature, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), or recreational activities. 2. Paid First to the Top Fellowship at the Tennessee Department of Education in Nashville, TN

The fellowship is designed to provide students disciplines with an opportunity to play an integral role in the innovative and ambitious work taking place at the Tennessee Department of Education and across the state. Each fellow will be matched with a top leader in the department to work on essential projects tied to “First to the Top” goals. Potential examples include: designing a competition and forum for high-performing and fast-improving schools to share their strongest practices with schools struggling in similar areas; developing a state-wide principal training academy model; and helping develop training and support for Common Core implementation.

DREAM is a youth-based Village Mentoring organization. We build communities of families and college students that empower children from affordable housing neighborhoods to recognize their options, make informed decisions, and achieve their dreams. Summer Community Interns work with a young, passionate group of people to provide awesome summer programming to children ages five to eighteen living in affordable housing communities across Vermont. Each intern is responsible for programming with housing communities in a region, but also collaborates with other communities outside their region. In addition to developing and implementing children’s programming, each intern also works closely with families to build and support strong community relationships.

2. Paid Political Consulting Intern at Cence Cincotti Strategies in Boston, MA

A newly formed progressive/Democratic political consulting firm in Boston is seeking summer interns to be involved in many different issues and campaigns at once. he firm works with dozens of clients with an eye toward the November 2012 elections, from candidates to advocacy campaigns. As an intern, you’ll be exposed to the inner workings of local politics—meeting movers and shakers, being privy to inside strategy, and navigating the state’s more-complicated-than-it-gets-credit-for political geography. 3. Paid Summer Outreach Intern at Wilderness Workshop in Carbondale, CO

The Wilderness Workshop intern will work under the supervision of various Wilderness Workshop and Hidden Gems Campaign staff, and the primary activities will consist of the following: organizing support for congressional wilderness proposals; conducting hikes and tours of the proposed wilderness areas; and planning and coordinating summer events. This summer they are looking for interns to help take their apps and their tens of thousands of registered users social. You’ve Secured An Internship–What’s Next?

Now that you’ve locked down  your summer internship (Congrats 🙂 ) there are few steps to consider when moving forward. Is your internship paid? Do you need housing? Does your employer require that you receive academic credit? Here are a few tid bits of information to answer all these questions (and more!) and to help you finalize your summer plans.

1. Housing: If you’re looking for summer housing, whether that be in DC, New York, Boston or elsewhere, there are plenty of resources to assist in the process. Colleges and Universities in major cities offer dorm leasing in the summer, and websites like Craigslist Housing, IRoommates.com and Apartments.com, allow you to search for housing world. 2. Applying for Funding: The Center for Education in Action awards funds to support unpaid summer internship in all fields! The final deadline to apply for funding is May 14–head over to go/summerfunding to submit an application today!

3. Academic Credit: If your employer requires that you receive academic credit for your summer internship, EIA suggests that you come into Career Services to speak with an advisor. Most likely, you will need to submit a transcript notation form found here. This notation does not fulfill any graduation requirements and may not be accepted by some companies/organizations, so it’s best if you speak to an advisor before moving forward.

4. Make the most of your summer! Summer internships are an excellent way to explore career or academic interests and connect with experts in that field. Build relationships, network, and get to know the people behind the organization–they will provide valuable and insightful advice and information for you as you move forward.

Reporting directly to the CEO (Midd ’81, ’88), the intern will participate in a variety of activities within the agency–from working in the kitchen and delivering meals to sick clients, to shadowing the CEO in order to gain an understanding of the management of a complex nonprofit food program. 3.       Paid Food and Farm Intern at Vermont Youth Conservation Corps in Richmond, VT

This hands-on experience allows interns to take part in all aspects of food production, from ecological soil management, plant propagation, to disease and pest control and raising pasture poultry. Interns will be responsible for daily chores and upkeep of the farm, and be active participants in CSA pick-ups and farmers market sales. Heyday Farm is two newly renovated historic farms (25 acres total) on the south end of Bainbridge Island that is a hub for promoting sustainable agriculture in partnership with other local organizations. 6.       Campus Sustainability Assessment Intern at the University of Chile in Santiago

The University of Chile faculty has been working on a transversal sustainability initiative over the last 2 years that includes changes to the curriculum, promoting service learning and public workshops, and establishing a recycling program. This intern will propose and apply a methodology for comprehensive sustainability assessment, using the STARS system (https://stars.aashe.org/) and adapting it to the University. The Food Systems Internship will provide hands-on opportunities to experience diverse aspects of food production and food system education from farm to table. the Middlebury Food Systems Intern will participate in the breadth of Farm to School education activities taking place in 2012 summer season including the Summer Institute with Vermont FEED (Food Education Every Day), a National Farm to Cafeteria conference in Burlington, Project Seasons for Farmers, the Vermont Fresh Network annual forum at Shelburne Farms, as well as a diversity of summer youth programs.
