HCMC Research Associate Program, Minneapolis, MN
The Research Associate Program began in 2000 with a group of ten undergraduates and medical students who were recruited to help collect data for headache, conscious sedation, overdose, and economic hardship studies. Today the program has grown to a group of over 70 students, presently gathering data on a group of studies ranging from shock to procedural sedation. Many past participants have gone on to win admission to medical school on their first attempt and have reported that participation in the program gave them a competitive edge. Green Chemistry Program: Washington, DC
During December 2010, EPA will receive nominations for the 2011 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards; during January, EPA staff and interns will read all of the nominations, write a brief review of each nomination, discuss the nominated technologies in multidisciplinary group meetings, and prepare the nominations for the judging panel convened by the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute®. Each 8-page nomination represents a new green chemistry technology; EPA expects to receive as many as 100 nominations representing a wide variety of sub disciplines of chemistry, especially organic chemistry and genetic engineering/enzyme evolution. Abstracts of last year’s nominations are posted on the program website. Looking at this document will give potential interns an idea of the types of technologies that EPA may receive in nominations. Interns may choose nominations to read based on their training and interests. EPA will provide interns with a basic education in green chemistry and the opportunity to work along side professional chemists, most of whom have PhD degrees.
