About

This year the Gensler Family Symposium on Gender in a Global Context asks why and how feminist activists, academics and artists continue to roll up their sleeves and do the work that needs to be done despite the rise of global fascism and environmental collapse. We are envisioning this as a kind of feminist survival camp where we learn what is already being done and how we can do more. It is this kind of feminist world-making, even when it feels as if the world is un-making itself, that we wish to explore.

This year the Program in Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies, with support from the Feminist Resource Center at Chellis, is excited to partner with the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity for two days of events. Thursday the 23rd will see an afternoon talk on race, the body and feminist world making. Friday the 24th will be a day-long event with speakers presenting their work on feminist activism after Fukushima, war and citizenship, migration and ā€œungrateful citizenship,ā€ and fragile masculinity and fascist states (see “Speaker Bios”). A conversation about feminist indigenous art and world-making as well as break-out sessions on feminist activism around migrant justice, electoral politics, anti-racist activism and how to make your own feminist zines will follow.

The day will wrap up with a spoken word performance by Muslim Girls Making Change.

Please join us Thursday April 23rd at 4:30pm (MBH 220) and then Friday April 24th, 2020 (Wilson Hall in the McCullough Student Center) as we imagine not just surviving the current historical moment, but creating a more feminist future.
