Experts drafting the negotiations on the Istanbul Convention had no direct political pressure and opted for the social constructionist approach to define “gender.” This was the first such definition in an international treaty. The definition was as follows: “gender” shall mean the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for women and men.”
