Charlie hails from Beverly, Massachusetts and is a member of Middlebury’s class of 2018. His major remains a mystery. He loves music, running, farming, writing, cooking, eating and all kinds of sports. He is always well-hydrated and loves avocados. Charlie will be working at Middlebury Foods in Vermont.
Kelsey Voit is working at Louisville Grows. She is a junior at the University of Louisville majoring in Geography and minoring in both Social Change
and Political Science. She is an aspiring urban planner who is passionate about the environment and social justice. Through her involvement in a myriad of groups on campus, Kelsey actively works to further sustainability and human rights goals at the university. She is extremely excited to participate in the Middlebury FoodWorks fellowship, and she believes that food is the central avenue through which people can be motivated to take action to mitigate climate change, social inequities, and other global issues. Additionally, Kelsey is an avid musician, enjoys pondering life and sharing her musings on her personal blog, and is happiest when surrounded by passionate people and beautiful weather.
Cornelia Brabazon is working at the University of Louisville Gray Street Farmers Market. She is from Manchester, Vermont. She is currently a student at College of the Atlantic where everyone has the same major, human ecology, which involves the study of systems both natural and manmade. As a part of her work study, she is a sustainable food systems assistant which allows me to work on projects that involve sustainable food issues such as the Real Food Challenge which tracks the amount of local, organic, and humane food that is purchased through different universities. Her Interest in food systems was first sparked in high school while at The Mountain Campus, a semester long program on a separate campus that allows 20 students to study the principals of sustainability through camping trips, visits to farms and sustainable businesses and other hands-on learning techniques. After a trip to Waitsfeild, Vermont, a place filled with environmentally conscious entrepreneurs, she realized the importance of food on both a philosophical and cultural level.
Ashley Burton is working for New Roots Inc. inc. She is a Masters of Public Health Student at Jackson State University. She is from Memphis, TN and an alumni of the University of Tennessee at Martin. During her undergraduate years, she learned about food insecurity. Thus, decided to take action as a community organizer. Through her experiences and education she has contiued to ignite others in food justice and sustainability practices.
Yingshi Liang is working as a University of Louisville EcoRep. She is currently a first-year student at Middlebury College.Her hometown is Foshan, China. She moved to San Francisco, California in 2010 and graduated from high school there. She has not decided her major yet but she hopes to pursue in social science field.
Caroline is a rising junior (’17) at Brown University studying Public Policy and Economics. She will be working on the Food Team at the World Resources Institute this summer. She is very excited to learn about sustainability, urban food systems, and the relevant policy applications.
My name is Nina Dewees and I am a rising senior at Dartmouth College, majoring in Environmental Studies. I have lived in New York City for my entire life. I am an avid cook, I love farmers markets, and I am very interested in urban sustainable food systems. I am so excited to be working at Union Kitchen this summer. I can’t wait to participate in FoodWorks and learn so much about the thing I am most passionate about—food!
Sarah is a rising senior from Minneapolis, MN. She is a student at Middlebury College and is majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Spanish. As a FoodWorks fellow in Washington D.C., Sarah hopes to apply her interests in food studies and community health to learn more about food systems and contribute to DC’s local food movement. She is looking forward to her internship at Common Good City Farm where she will be supporting the urban farm’s small enterprise program and developing cooking and nutrition workshops for community members.
My name is Lindsey Letellier, and I’m a rising Junior at NYU studying nutrition and dietetics. I’m originally from southern California, and food has always been a huge part of my life. I enjoy cooking, baking, eating, and Crossfit. I’m looking forward to better understanding my relationship with food and seeing, a sustainable food system actually looks like, and just being surrounded by food for 9 weeks. Lindsey will be interning with EatsPlace in Washington DC this summer.
Grace is a rising Sophomore Feb (‘18.5) at Middlebury potentially majoring in Political Science. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, and is so excited to live and learn in D.C. this summer! For FoodWorks, she will be interning at Food and Water Watch as their research intern.
My name is Rose and I am a rising junior studying Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I am from Beijing and I am very passionate about food, culture, and sustainable development. I want to be a part of FoodWorks because I want to learn more about local food systems, and engage the local communities to lead healthier and sustainable lives. My summer internship is doing sustainability research at the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. I am very excited about the FoodWorks 5th Day learning opportunity that will broaden my perspective of food studies, and I am looking forward to living and studying together with my fellows in DC over the summer!
My name is Erin and I am a rising senior at Clemson University. I am studying Food Science and Technology and I am passionate about human health, local food systems and environmental sustainability. As an advocate of the locavore movement, I love supporting local farmers and artisans in any way that I can. In my free time I like to travel, run, explore farmers markets and cook with friends. At school I work as a part of an organization that puts on a student lead farmers market and last summer I spent two months working on an organic farm in Santa Cruz California. This past semester I had the opportunity to study abroad at a university in Florence, Italy. Through my time in Italy, I gained in interest in Food Policy and a desire to learn more about the laws and policies that govern the American food system. I was excited to hear about the FoodWorks program and the new Washington DC Branch. I am excited to be a part of the program this summer and looking forward to the opportunity to intern with the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.
My name is Madyson Martin. I usually go by Mady. I attend the University of Louisville and am studying Psychology and Nutrition. I work at Kosair’s Children’s hospital and also serve at a local restaraunt during the school year. I love being active and taking on new adventures. I love to go running, play sports, hiking, pretty much anything outside with the sun shining! I became interested in local food systems and the benefits of locally grown produce in the past two years. I am very into health and fitness with a lot of focus on eating the right foods. I look forward to this amazing learning and growing experience, and am so enthusiastic to meet everyone and experience D.C. together! Madyson will be interning at Bread for the City this summer.
I’m Fredy, and I’m a rising junior at Middlebury College majoring in Architecture & the Environment. I’m originally from El Salvador, but I have been living in Maryland since 2009. Among other things, I’m interested in languages, music, and, yes, food. This summer I will be working with DC Greens as an intern in their K Street Farm. I’m looking forward to learning more about food systems both locally and in general, and getting my hands dirty in the process!
Jeanne is a rising junior from Philadelphia studying Environmental Studies at Hamilton College. This summer she is interning with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) where she is excited to learn more about the role of food cultures and systems in relation to the economy, policy and place. At Hamilton, she has developed an interest in sustainable development and environmental health, which was spurred by her ongoing research and policy analysis on mercury and canned tuna. In her spare time, she enjoys sharing meals and cooking with her friends, especially for her most prioritized meal of the week–Sunday brunch. As a writer and photographer for Spoon University, Jeanne has had the opportunity to explore Central New York’s food system, which has solidified her love for all things apples, ice cream, cheese, and heirloom tomatoes.
My name is Raphaelle Ortiz and I will be working for the Refugee Agriculture Promotion Program. I’m a rising senior at Hopkins in Global Environmental Change and Sustainability (GECS)- I’m originally from DC and I’m half French, half Filipino. I grew up in Bethesda, MD and went to the French International School. I also lived in Paris for 2 years when I was in middle school. I have 3 brothers who live in DC, Paris, and London. During the semester, I often commute between Baltimore and DC (where my mum lives). My hobbies are traveling and making art.
Ann Hageman will be working for Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. She is a native of southeastern Virginia and a lover of the outdoors. Last year she became a full time student at Old Dominion University to complete her BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology. She will graduate in August. Her minor in Global Engineering with courses in sustainable development, world resources and communication across cultures has inspired a desire and direction for her next career. Ann is also a certified Integral yoga instructor. She lives in Newport News VA with her wife Kelly.
Camryn Hellwarth is currently a student at Sarah Lawrence College where she studies Environmental Science, Food Studies, and Journalism. In addition to her work as the Program and Outreach Coordinator at Teens for Food Justice, she teaches ballet at her local dance studio and coaches Learn to Skate classes. Camryn is also active in philanthropic work, and volunteers with organizations such as Midnight Run, which delivers food to the homeless, and Dorot, a program where volunteers visit homebound elderly citizens of the Jewish community. Camryn will be working at NOFA-VT.
My name is Diana, and I am a senior at the George Washington University. I am a journalism major and sustainability minor and am passionate about telling stories and food equity. I hope to eventually work as a journalist or in television production. Diana will be working at Hannaford Career Center in Vermont.
My name is Dor and I am an international student from Israel studying at the George Washington University. I am pursuing dual degrees in Systems Engineering and Philosophy, with a minor in Sustainability and will graduate next May. My interests focus on urban design and the integration of sustainable food, renewable energy, and education in rural and urban communities. I am excited to be a part of The Foodworks Program and learn more about local food systems and intern with Vermont’s Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets.
Emily Robinson will be interning with Seed Capital KY this summer. She grew up in Middlebury, Vermont and currently is a freshman Feb at Middlebury College, and is planning on majoring in environmental studies. Her love of food, cooking and farming has inspired her to work on a farm in Italy last fall and to become the treasurer for the Organic Farm at Middlebury College. Her other interests include hiking, animal rights and spending time outside.
