Thanks so much for this fascinating interview, Charlie. I’ve lived near Middlebury for 42 years and had no idea about the exciting initiative you highlight here. The combination of public need and for-profit businesses has great potential, as Emma articulates so forcefully. We’ve gotten used to thinking of commercial businesses, especially at the large scale, as bound to maximize profit above all. But the growing prominence of “B-corporations,” which can legally put non-economic issues front and center, formalizes the reality that many business people have long been interested in “the double bottom-line”–doing well while doing good. This will be an important issue to keep in mind throughout the course.
