I am delighted to share the news that Peter Brown has been named emergency management coordinator for Middlebury College. His first day in this new role will be December 11, 2023.

Peter came to Middlebury College after a 34-year career serving in progressively responsible roles including interim fire chief with the Burlington Fire Department, from which he retired in 2020 at the rank of deputy chief. He continued to work in public safety at the Burlington Airport Fire Department and UVM prior to joining us as a telecommunicator. In addition to his current role, Peter is also an intermittent employee with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a safety officer. Peter has been deployed to several disasters including multiple hurricanes and a commercial airliner crash with a DMORT team.

Peter started his career in emergency response as an emergency medical technician (EMT), and later became a full-time firefighter with the Burlington International Airport Fire Department. While there, he participated in several mass casualty exercises and learned Crash Fire Rescue techniques. He later joined the Burlington Fire Department.

His training has included National Fire Academy courses in incident management focusing on large scale emergencies and hazardous material events as well as courses on responding to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosives (CBRNE) incidents, ICS, and NIMS.

Peter is a past member of the State of Vermont Hazardous Materials Response team and Urban Search and Resue team.

He is a lifelong Vermonter, living on the family farm where they have produced maple syrup since 1904. He enjoys traveling and many outdoor activities including sugaring, hunting, fishing and cutting wood to name a few.

While we will miss having him in telecommunications, we look forward to seeing him in this new role!
