Informational meeting on Summer Study, 10/2
Dear Colleagues,
Last spring, many of you shared ideas for exciting courses you would love to teach if only you were free of the time and space constraints imposed by the regular academic year. What if, for example, you could bring a group of students to Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park to study paleolimnology; or teach a course on prison education programs by implementing one at Vermont’s Southeast State Correctional Facility; or spend time with your students in Ferguson, Missouri taking a critical race perspective on Michael Brown’s shooting and the related media coverage? Summer Study is only 9 months away and is designed for exactly these kinds of flexible, experiential opportunities. The process for proposing a Summer Study course idea will be explained at an informational meeting on Thursday, October 2nd at 4:30pm in the Orchard Room at Hillcrest, with plenty of time for Q and A. Please join us if you have an idea for Summer Study that you are interested in pursuing— or if you just want to hear more about the process.

Workshop on scholarly productivity at Smith College 10/7
If there is enough interest in this faculty development opportunity, we will coordinate a carpool. For more information, please contact Jim Ralph at adeans@middlebury.edu. Original invitation below.
Dear Colleagues,
Faculty members at your institutions and their partners interested in increasing their scholarly productivity are invited to attend a workshop by Helen Sword entitled “Habits of Highly Productive Writers.” Helen Sword, author of Stylish Academic Writing, has surveyed more than one thousand academics from across the disciplines and around the world to find out about their professional formation as writers, their daily work habits, and their habits of mind. In this interactive workshop, she will offer a smorgasbord of evidence-based strategies for colleagues who aspire to write more confidently, stylishly, engagingly, daringly, or simply more prolifically. A PDF flyer with details is attached.
This workshop is sponsored by Five Colleges, Inc., the Academic Career Network, the Smith College Provost, and the Smith College Sherrerd Center for Teaching and Learning.
RSVP by 10/8 to Christine Pelletier.
Best wishes,
Floyd Cheung
