The AAUP believes that salary transparency strengthens all of us by giving faculty more information about a central component of our compensation. Vermont joined more than a dozen other states and jurisdictions in the US in enacting a pay transparency law this year. Vermont’s Act 155, which requires employers with five or more employees to include a salary range on all job postings, went into effect on July 1. The Vermont Attorney General’s office issued this document providing guidance on the new law.
Middlebury’s newest job postings comply with the law by providing an estimated salary range, and we think we can work together to provide each other — and future new hires — with even more information to engage in successful salary negotiation.
Sharing information about salary can often feel taboo, and we understand that faculty may have mixed feelings about this. As a first step, we’d like to learn more about your thoughts at this time to gain a clearer understanding of faculty’s desire to know more about salary ranges and structures at our institution, as well as faculty’s willingness to share salary and other related information with each other toward this end.
