Fun in the snow at Middlebury College! These recently digitized 16mm films haven’t been seen in more than fifty years.
This silent film montage shows scenes of the 40 meter jump on Chipman Hill, early ski trails at the Snow Bowl and the “new” 50 meter ski jump, Mountain Club outings to the winter woods, and even “aero-skijoring” on Lake Champlain. Winter Carnival the way it was in the middle of the last century!
And this newsreel produced by Paramount Pictures in 1949 is an entertaining glimpse back into a unique moment in time. It was shown in movie theaters throughout the country before the feature film.
In this clip, members of the Women’s Forum of Middlebury College load up holiday gifts into a truck parked behind Forrest Hall, en route to the Meeting House in Ripton, VT. Upon their arrival in Ripton, local children run (and slide, trudge, and sled) to meet them. The Middlebury women, joined by a costumed Santa, distribute their holiday gifts.
Established in 1937, the Women’s Forum was itially organized to further interest in economic, political, and social issues of the day. In 1944 the group merged with the Student Action Assembly to focus on social and service work. This clip dates likely dates from the early to mid 1940’s.
Happy holidays from Special Collections & Archives.
And with winter comes the massive shipping rush of late December. Due to the increased risk of losses (and the lack of open libraries willing to send things) the Interlibrary Loan Department limits ordering and shipping during this time.
If you need anything before winter break request it now! Interlibrary loan requests submitted to ILLiad after Dec. 15th will be ordered in early January.
ILLiad article requests will continue to be filled by RapidILL through Dec. 21st, but must have a valid ISSN and yearto be processed a as Rapid request.
For loan materials use NExpress: (http://go/NExpress). NExpress will stay open during break. Requests placed in NExpress go straight to the Lending Library for processing. Loans ordered from NExpress over break should arrive in early January.
