Join the MIIS 2011 Innovatable IDEAS contest!

Following in the footsteps of last year’s conference, this year’s TEDxMonterey will inspire, engage and connect the Monterey community with fascinating leaders, inventors, scientists, artists, community activists, global dreamers and YOU.

The theme of this year’s TEDxMonterey event to be held on April 15, 2011 on campus is Cultivating Innovation.  In the spirit of promoting creativity and innovation, the Digital Media Commons and the organizers of TEDxMonterey present the 2011 InnovateABLE IDEAS contest.

The contest will run in 5 phases:

  1. BRAINSTORM February 11-23 In this phase we invite our community to register an idea
  2. CHAMPION February 24 – March 8 During this period individuals will team up and refine their ideas
  3. SLAM! March 9 12-2pm A lunchtime Idea Slam where Idea Teams will go public Pecha Kucha style!
  4. VOTE March 9 – March 18 The MIIS Community will have a chance to review ideas and vote on their favorites
  5. PITCH at TedxMonterey April 15 The top 3 ideas will have an opportunity to pitch their idea for a final vote

An InnovateAble IDEA is something that’s DO-Able, a pragmatic idea that solves a problem, and helps to further connect the MIIS community.  It should also strive to do more with less.

Do you have an IDEA of how to do something different at MIIS?  Make something more efficient?  Higher quality?  Even better?  Or something brand spanking new?  Get on the InnovateAbles Forum and get brain-jammin’!  The IDEA submission phase ends Wednesday, February 23rd.

DMC Open House! Nov 1-5

The Digital Media Commons in collaboration with the Center for Advising and Career Services, Alumni Relations, the Office of International Student Services, and the Networking club, cordially invite you to participate in our Fall Open House.  This year we’ve planned a week of activities to complement our regular Tuesday/Thursday workshop sessions: lunchtime workshops (12:30-1:30pm) and presentations on career development topics, as well as afternoon sandboxing sessions (4:00-5:30pm) to share innovative projects and ideas.

The theme for the Open House is: the 21st Century Professional.  In the spirit of this theme we’ve invited staff, faculty, students, and alumni to share projects, innovations, and information that are shaping how we work, how we learn, and how we continue to develop and adapt our skills.

We invite you to check out our Program and to attend a session or two in Kade during the week to contribute to the conversation.

Seating will be limited, and as an added incentive to attend, there will be a daily drawing for MIIS memorabilia, and an end of week drawing for an ipodnano!

MIIS Invited to Join National New Media Seminar

Here’s a provocative proposition:

“Most of our discussions around technology … tend to focus on tools (Blackboard, laptops, etc.) rather than getting to the heart of the many ways that technology is changing the world. The implications of these changes are at least as sweeping as anything we’ve seen since Gutenberg, if not Homer. We need to be talking about these kinds of issues as educators.”

If you are interested in joining such a conversation, a small group from the Monterey Institute plans to participate in a national, networked seminar, led by Baylor Professor Gardner Campbell on “Awakening the Digital Imagination.”

  • Time: 2-2:45 each Thursday
  • Location: Digital Media Commons (Kade second floor)
  • Time commitment: 45 minutes per week, plus light reading from The New Media Reader, plus optional podcast and online discussion with colleagues all over the country.

Still interested?  all the details are included in the invitation below.

This opportunity came to our attention through our institutional membership in the New Media Consortium, which is available to us as part of Middlebury.

**************************************************************

Dear colleagues,

Please consider this your invitation to participate in “Awakening the Digital Imagination,” a networked New Media Faculty/Staff Development Seminar for Fall, 2010. If you’d like to investigate the history of ideas about networked computing, rise above the endless churn of gadgets and websites, and read some fantastically visionary essays ranging from video art to interactive computing to comics, this may just be the seminar for you.

The seminar began as an experiment in faculty development at Baylor University in the spring of 2010. A small group of faculty, staff, and graduate students met once a week to discuss an essay in The New Media Reader. Most participants reported deeper engagements with the creative possibilities of new media for teaching and learning, as well as a greater sense of confidence in their own abilities to make sense of the accelerating change surrounding us. You can read one eloquent account of the outcomes here.

For this fall’s networked iteration, individuals or groups will have their own weekly seminars roughly in sync with the Baylor seminar, with blogging and other resource sharing aggregated both locally and in a Netvibes portal. Local seminars meeting on the same day and time will have the possibility for synchronous interaction, but as long as we all stay in sync from week to week with the readings, we’ll have the opportunity for meaningful asynchronous interaction in an online forum. We can also link to each other’s blogs, interact around Delicious/Twitter/Flickr streams, co-create podcasts, etc. The richness and diversity of the networking are up to us to develop and enjoy.

This year, the seminar begins the week of September 8. You can find the syllabus here. A summary of the design and recommendations for the networked seminars is here.

You are also more than welcome to participate individually by doing the weekly readings and contributing to the discussion in our online forum or by adding to our social media streams.

As with last spring, this fall’s seminar is a collaborative effort with the New Media Consortium.

The changes we are living through are highly disruptive, but they bring with them enormous opportunities. Tom Haymes of Houston Community College, one of our networked sites this term, put it very well indeed: “Most of our discussions around technology … tend to focus on tools (Blackboard, laptops, etc.) rather than getting to the heart of the many ways that technology is changing the world. The implications of these changes are at least as sweeping as anything we’ve seen since Gutenberg, if not Homer. We need to be talking about these kinds of issues as educators.”

I hope you can join us in this vital conversation. If this fall doesn’t work for you, keep us in mind for the spring, when we’ll run the seminar again.

Best regards,
Gardner

Two More Days: The TEDGlobal Breakfast Club

Since we were a successful host of a large TEDx event, TED has given MIIS a license to view the TEDGlobal conference live.  This is $500 experience that we will get for free!  The Kade Center will be showing portions of the event via livestream.

TLC/DMC will host the following sessions:

  • Wednesday, July 14, 9:00 – 10:45  Session 6 – Different by Design
  • Thursday, July 15, 9-10:45 Session 10 – Who’s the Teacher

Bring your own coffee and we’ll supply pastries!

Check out the program guide for more details, and stop by Kade for a little professional development without leaving our campus!

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984 – in Monterey!) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TEDx program and the annual TED Prize.

Scheduled maintenance for Blogs @ MIIS

The Blogs @ MIIS community will be down for scheduled maintenance on the morning of Wednesday, June 30. We will be upgrading to WordPress 3.0 so your Dashboard may look a little different once the blogs are back online.

We are also in the process of cleaning up inactive blogs within the community. Any blog that has been created but never updated will be deleted on August 1, 2010. If this applies to any of your blogs, you will receive an email within the next few days detailing which blogs will be affected and instructions to prevent them from being deleted.
