Something for Everyone April 11-15: Digital Media Commons Spring 2011 Open House Week

The Digital Media Commons in collaboration with the Center for Advising and Career Services, Alumni Relations, the Staff Advisory Team, Middlebury Library & Information Services (LIS), the Coleman Library, and the Networking club, cordially invite you to participate in our Spring 2011 Open House Week.

This semester we’ve planned another full week of activities to complement our regular Tuesday/Thursday workshop sessions including: lunchtime workshops (12:30-1:30/:45pm) and presentations on career development topics, as well as afternoon development and sandboxing sessions (2:00-3:45 and 4:00-5:00pm) to share innovative projects and emerging ideas.

The theme for the Spring 2011 Open House, “Cultivating Innovation,” was inspired by our work with this years TEDxMonterey event which will cap off our week of sharing, sandboxing, and learning on April 15th. In the spirit of this theme we’ve invited staff, faculty, students, and alumni to share projects, innovations, and emerging ideas that are shaping how we work, how we learn, and how we continue to develop and adapt our skills.

We invite you to check out our Program and to attend a session or two during the week to contribute to the conversation. Seating will be limited, and as an added incentive to attend, there will be a daily drawing for a book reflecting our Open House theme, and an end of week drawing for a Kindle eReader!

Vote!… for Innovatable IDEAS

Nine Teams pitched their IDEAS in the DMC’s InnovateAble IDEAS SLAM yesterday in the Holland Center.  They’re all vying for a chance to present at TEDxMonterey, and maybe even make their IDEAS a reality!  Three students who are competing to win the student speaker spot on the TEDx Monterey big stage also participated in the SLAM.

All students, faculty and staff are invited to be a part of the process – go online to watch videos of the presentations, and virtually vote for your favorite IDEAS! Voting is open until March 18th. Help us build a culture of Innovation at MIIS – let’s be the change together!

Join the MIIS 2011 Innovatable IDEAS contest!

Following in the footsteps of last year’s conference, this year’s TEDxMonterey will inspire, engage and connect the Monterey community with fascinating leaders, inventors, scientists, artists, community activists, global dreamers and YOU.

The theme of this year’s TEDxMonterey event to be held on April 15, 2011 on campus is Cultivating Innovation.  In the spirit of promoting creativity and innovation, the Digital Media Commons and the organizers of TEDxMonterey present the 2011 InnovateABLE IDEAS contest.

The contest will run in 5 phases:

  1. BRAINSTORM February 11-23 In this phase we invite our community to register an idea
  2. CHAMPION February 24 – March 8 During this period individuals will team up and refine their ideas
  3. SLAM! March 9 12-2pm A lunchtime Idea Slam where Idea Teams will go public Pecha Kucha style!
  4. VOTE March 9 – March 18 The MIIS Community will have a chance to review ideas and vote on their favorites

An InnovateAble IDEA is something that’s DO-Able, a pragmatic idea that solves a problem, and helps to further connect the MIIS community.  It should also strive to do more with less.

Do you have an IDEA of how to do something different at MIIS?  Make something more efficient?  Higher quality?  Even better?  Or something brand spanking new?  Get on the InnovateAbles Forum and get brain-jammin’!  The IDEA submission phase ends Wednesday, February 23rd.

Two More Days: The TEDGlobal Breakfast Club

Since we were a successful host of a large TEDx event, TED has given MIIS a license to view the TEDGlobal conference live.  This is $500 experience that we will get for free!  The Kade Center will be showing portions of the event via livestream.

TLC/DMC will host the following sessions:

  • Wednesday, July 14, 9:00 – 10:45  Session 6 – Different by Design
  • Thursday, July 15, 9-10:45 Session 10 – Who’s the Teacher

Bring your own coffee and we’ll supply pastries!

Check out the program guide for more details, and stop by Kade for a little professional development without leaving our campus!

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984 – in Monterey!) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TEDx program and the annual TED Prize.
