THE UMOJA COMMUNITY
UMOJA, pronounced oo-mo-juh, is a Kiswahili word which means Unity. Established by a small group of students in 2001, Umoja has always aimed to create a space to focus on Africa and the diaspora, and to allow the Middlebury community to get a first hand experience of the continent from the perspective of those who are steeped in it. Another goal of the club has been to educate through the annual Sub-Saharan Africa Symposium (now the AMKA Conference).
We enjoy promoting the rich and diverse African cultures, and fostering social, cultural and political awareness about the African continent.
All interested people, African or not, are welcome at our bi-weekly meetings on Fridays at 6pm in LaForce 121.
