    A Harvard-trained sociologist, Peter Moskos, wanted to do research on policework in East Baltimore. The commissioner would not let him conduct his research, but he did let Moskos join the force. Moskos then wrote a scathing book about his experience, called “Cop in the Hood,” in which he calls for abandonment of the futile war on drugs.
