Peter Hans Matthews came to Middlebury in the fall of 1995, soon after completing his PhD at Yale under the supervision of John Geanakoplos. He was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, and has a BA (First Honours) from McGill University and an MA from Queen’s University at Kingston in Ontario. In 2008, he was appointed the Jermain Professor of Political Economy at Middlebury.

He teaches courses in macroeconomics, poverty and inequality, labor economics and game theory, and does research in behavioral economics, radical political economy and the economics of philanthropy.

He is married to Carolyn Craven, a development economist and award-winning children’s book author. They share an old Vermont house with their remarkable twin daughters, Emma Laurel and Catriona Mari, and two cats.
