FAQ’s About MUN and MiddMUNC
Q: What is a GA? What is a JCC?
A: A GA is a general assembly committee. General assemblies are the larger bodies within the United Nations and are comprised of countries from various parts of the world. A JCC is a joint crisis committee in which multiple crisis committees exist in the same universe and interact and compete with one another. A crisis committee is a committee in which the delegates actions have direct and immediate actions on the committee and the universe in which it exists.

Q: What if I don’t agree with my country/character’s beliefs?
A: We understand that as a MUN delegate you may be asked to defend a position that you don’t agree with. This, however, is the nature of MUN and we expect all delegates to represent the beliefs of their country and to not diverge to an extreme. For example, if you are representing an authoritarian regime you would not advocate for liberal or Western reforms. We want to see delegates making speeches and writing directives/resolutions that align with and further the goals of their position. That being said, delegates should not say anything in committee that discriminates against any group of people or attacks another country. Delegates should exercise their discretion in representing their country without offending other people or making anyone uncomfortable.

Q: What is MiddMUNC’s technology policy?
A: As we want all students to be on an equal playing field, MiddMUNC will not be allowing the use of technology (laptops, tablets, cellphones, etc.) in committee. Please see above for recommended supplies for committee. We will provide note-pads for the crisis committees to facilitate crisis notes but those will be the only office supplies provided during the conference.

Q: How will awards be decided?
A: At MiddMUNC, we want the focus of delegates to be on fostering debate and drafting resolutions and directives, not winning awards. That being said, MiddMUNC will reward delegates who perform well in committee with Best Delegate (1), Outstanding Delegate (1), Honorable Mention (1 per crisis, 2 in GA), Best Position Paper (1), and Verbal Commendations (at the discretion of the chairs). Chairs (and crisis staff in crisis committees) will decide awards based on who they believe has contributed the most to committee and shown the best speaking, debating, and writing skills. Chairs will not be tracking number of times spoken, number of directives written, etc. and, rather, will determine awards based on the substance of delegates’ contributions.

Resolution Writing Procedure
As this may be the first Model UN conference for many delegates, we have prepared a guide on how to write resolutions for general assembly committees. This guide provides the procedure for writing a resolution and you can consult the sample resolution below for what a finished resolution will look like.

Sample Resolutions, Position Papers, Crisis Notes, and Directives
For delegates who are not familiar with Model United Nations, feel free to consult these sample pieces of writing in order to get familiar with the work expected for MiddMUNC 2020. We also highly recommend the website “Best Delegate” as a great place to start for all new delegates.
